Spyderco Sharpmaker Not Sharpening Entire Blade?

Hello all, I recently obtained a Spyderoco Sharpmaker and I've read the instructions and watched the video twice through. I sharpened my Kabar Beck Knecker (1095 steel, 15 degree angle), and it can literally shave hair now. However, 1/4 of the blade isn't very sharp. It's the 1/4 near the handle, but everything else is razor sharp. The unsharpened part has the factory vertical texture still, if that makes sense, while the rest of the blade has a smooth texture. I am keeping the blade vertically throughout when I am sharpening, and I try to be as consistent as possible. I've done three passes so far. Am I doing something wrong?

take a Sharpie and color the edge and take a few passes. See if the color is coming off the part of the edge that isn't getting sharp.
 
If the knife has a ricasso, the sharpmaker won't be able to sharpen the edge closest to it.
