Hello all
After reading everyone's praise of the spyderco sharpmaker, I bought one off Ebay which was supposed to be "brand new". When I recieved this item, the darker rods (med) seemed to be missing some of the coating in places. One of the darker rods coating appeared rubbed off in two places where the plastic would hold it against the side of sharpener. The fine white rods appeared fine, but they both had slight black lines in the middle of one side , again where these would be held on the side of the sharpmaker. My question is: is this normal? Does the side of the holder cause this (i dont think so). do these come from the factory like this? I'll try to post pics when I get a digital cam.

Thank you in advance
Mike

try cleaning them up with a brillo pad or a 3m pad and comet cleanser then take a look at them ... could be just some metal shavings gunking things up for you.

What you are seeing are steel shavings in the ceramic of the rod. It isn't a big deal unless it really builds up and then you just give them a good scrub and run them through the dishwasher.

You want to see this happen when sharpening as it is a sign that the rods are working and removing the steel required to get the burr and sharpen the blade.

Grab a bunch of old dull kitchen knives and give it a go. The proof is in the results, not the appearance.

One last tip. Don't proceed to the next step until the edge is very very very sharp at the current step.

Were the items in a sealed blister pack? If the items were sealed, maybe they got loose and rubbed against each other. I ordered a set from spydieguys on eBay. I hope to get it soon. I'll report back what condition I get them in.

The Sharpmaker rods are solid ceramic. They don't have a coating that serves a useful purpose. If there was a coating on the rods you would want to get rid of it by using the rods or cleaning them. Clean the rods with something like an abrasive sink cleanser (like Comet) and water. I use a terry cloth rags to rub this stuff on the surface.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP!!!!
I sent the one rod back to the seller who will send me a new one. Other then that the kit was fine. The rubbed off parts of the problem rod were no metal shavings, I have no idea what could have caused that.
