Hey yall. As one of my first posts here on blade forums, I'd like to give any of you out there looking for a sharpening system some knowledge. If you need a system to quickly restore a razor edge, the sharpmaker is the way to go. If you have grind issues, or chips, youre going to need something else. But for general edge maintenance, I dont see how the sharpmaker can be beat. When your knife starts to get dull, a few strokes on the flat side of the white rods will bring your knife to a shaving sharp edge. Its also great for sharpening other tools, and while it may seem like a hoax, it really does work. If anyone has seen the scene on the product DVD where Sal Glesser removes the burrs from a screwdriver, Id like to say that is a useful function. The flat blade driver on my SAK was all chewed up, and within 3 minutes I had it all fixed up again, good as new. For the $50 youll spend, it cant be beat. Its the system to go with. Dont waste time on pull through systems or stones if your a newbie, just take out the guesswork and get the sharpmaker. Once you want to fix chips, and things like that, and Edge Pro would be a good option. However, my lansky rod system and sharpmaker have completed all my tasks so far! Hope this helps someone out there.

Yup, the Sharpmaker is my go-to tool for touching up an edge as well. Sucks if you need to remove any significant amount of metal at all, but for touching up that edge that's just starting to loose it's bite, it works great. I use an EdgePro and a Kalamazoo belt grinder for serious sharpening or repairs, and the Sharpmaker for keeping them that way. Bonus for the Sharpmaker having no consumable parts, being highly portable, and costing a quarter of what either of the other options I have costs. If you're new to using it, remember to have some Comet or something similar on hand (I use Barkeeper's Friend) to clean the rods when they start to load up. It works a lot better when the rods are good and clean.

Good advice, and welcome to the forum!
