spyderco sharpmaker vs smiths ccd4

Both systems operate on the same principle and are very very easy to use. The Smith's is very basic compared to the Sharpmaker. It's made of fairly sturdy plastic. It has one sharpening angle, compared to the Sharpmaker's two. Additionally, it only comes with one "grit" of rod, again compared to the Sharpmaker's two. The Sharpmaker's rods are also longer than those on the Smith's system.

If you're looking to sharpen longer knives, want more angle options, or just want the better of the two systems, definitely go with the Sharpmaker if you can afford it.

That being said, I own the Smith's system and it provides me with a very nice working edge and I would recommend it to anyone short on funds. It can be had for less than $20, verses around $50 for the Sharpmaker.

As I said though: if you have the funds, I would definitely recommend going for the Sharpmaker, as it is superior.

I actually mainly use a Smith's CCD4 for touching up my knives and I can tell you I strongly disagree with the above statement of "Working edge".
Used properly, the ceramic rods will give a razor edge.
That being said, I would shell out the extra cash and get the Sharpmaker, Longer rods, more angle control, and the advantage of control of grit.

I only said "working edge" because it seems like some guys on this forum consider anything less than hair-popping and mirror polished to be a "working edge" ;)

All my knives sharpened on the CCD4 will shave hair off my arm, so yes, you could call them razor sharp.
