I am new to the wonderful world of knives and have a question about sharpening a knife. A lot of posts praise the Spyderco Sharpmaker. I was wondering which of the three angles to use for general sharpening of blades 2-10 inches long. I read somewhere that a angle between 10 and 20 degrees is ideal but also read that you should use the 40 degree angle on the Sharpmaker to sharpen most knives. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Bob

Hi Bob,
Welcome to the forums.

The Spyderco Tri-Angle sharp maker is one of the best sharpening systems on the market. Don't get confused regarding their "40" degree angle. The rods actually sharpen 20 deg true on each side (thus 40 deg) so you're correct that most general utility knives are sharpened at a 20 degree angle..

Make sure you get the newer version, model 204 where you can sharpen even steeper at 15 deg per side (30 deg). This is very useful on really dull knives.

It's a very easy system to use and it is a breeze to do. The 204 comes with complete instructions and video.

Welcome to the world of knife knuts! I, like you, had heard and read alot about the 204 and finally got one last week from 1SKS and let me tell you...it is incredible. It not only sharpens accurately, but very fast as well. I was stumped on how best to sharpen my BM Stryker, serrated blade. I now have the right tool to accomplish the task. It put on a fast incredibly sharp edge. Touch ups are fast and effective.

The video is top notch...not even too cheezy. ;-) My hats are off to the guys at Spyderco on a job well done.

You will enjoy it--I am sure.
