Well I finally broke down and got myself a Spyderco Sharpmaker.. *it was on backorder for 2months* :) I just have to get used to it! My first two knives are not as sharp as I thought they would be after using it.. guess practices makes Perfect! :D

Yes, it takes some practice and some knowledge of blade geometry to sharpen perfectly. Make sure you're getting the burr/wire edge, since many knives have a higher edge angle than the Sharpmaker's 40 degrees. You're going to have to rebevel your knives or prop up the Sharpmaker to get the correct bevel angle.

Here's one of my threads about getting arbitrary angles with the Sharpmaker:

New way to use Sharpmaker

Hey Thanks.. wow.. I am going to have to read all that a second time... as I got lost..LOL.. I am not stupid.. but definately not a rocket scientist either.. plus I am exhausted.. *just got off work, and already the kids have me running around too*:D

It can take lots of time the first time you use it if the edge angle of the knife in not the same as the angle of the sharpmaker. The first time i sharpened my Custom 4" fixed blade on it it took me over 2 hours, now that the edge angle is the same i can touch it up in 2-3 min a week and it stays shaving sharp. Note the custom knife is made with L6, a fairly easy to sharpen steel, if it was a high end stainless(think S90V) then it could take all day to put a new angle on the edge. Thats why i have a DMT benchston to re-angle the edge and then move to the sharpmaker.

I was planning on buying the diamond rods but at like $70 the DMT's were cheaper and much more useful, with it i can sharpen at and angle, and sharpening big blades is much easyer to do on a 6X2 benchstone than a thin rod. Before you go out and buy the diamond rods consider a benchstone, try sharpening a 14" BK&T PM on a sharpmaker and see how long it takes or if its even possible.

Not a problem really and you can get the diamond rods for around 55-56 bucks.

It takes time to get the 204 down, but once you do, it's very worth it. I've had mine for about 4 months and my blades have never been so sharp :D
