I just sharpened a knife on my new sharpmaker. :)

Very impressive sharpener.

It's the only system that I use, besides my DMT Whetstone and Diafolds. :D

I just picked one up this week myself. I was a little skeptical when I looked at it, but it proved itself immediately. I don't know how I survived without one for so long! :-)

Take it easy,
Bob

It amazes me how many people buy Sharpmakers and are happy till that one knife comes along and they can't bring up the edge, no matter how hard they try.

I've owned one for 12 years and it sits in the kitchen for quick touchups, but 90% of my sharpening is still done freehand.

The Sharpmaker is a great crutch but still no match for learning to sharpen free hand.

I love mine and so far I haven't had a knife I couldn't sharpen although some have come close. If I have trouble reaching a grind, I'll tilt the blade and go freehanded.

For a jig.., I do think the Sharpmaker is about the best (in it's price range)....

The Edge-Pro Professional is a terrific sharperner.., but very expensive in comparison...

I've atually found quite a few knives I can't get the edge I'd like on with the 204 Sharpmaker.., but as mentioned..., it's great for touch-ups. I still perfer the Norton Tri-Hone system all around, but it does take some time to get good at sharpening free hand.

I have a lansky, sharpmaker and some stones. I use them all at one time or another depending on what I need to do. I use the lansky the least but it still has it's place. I like that I can hold the fine stone in my hand and use it freehand. It really polishes an edge. Not a good thing to do with the spydie stones. A person could filet their fingerprints off! Or so my "friend" says. :D

I forgot to mention, the way I can get such an edge on my swamprats using only sandpaper and a mouse pad is just plain bizarre!!! We are talking hairpopping sharp here. I think the secret is a combo of convex edge and whatever they call that steel. I dont' worry about the "angle", I just press and go. So far I've used 400 grit paper but I'm looking for better, not that it matters. It's idiot proof! The only problem is I think in terms of "what if". The biggies, the camp tramp and battle rat have a nice handy pouch in the sheath, so a strip of sandpaper is no big deal, and hunting season hasn't been in since I've gotten my swamp rats so I don't know about long term high usage yet but in the off chance I'm stranded on an island :D I don't know what the best improvised method would be on these blades. I know it wouldn't be much. My main concern would be messing up the convex grind with a stone. No kidding though, it's so easy to get an edge w/o a stone, only using a mousepad and good paper I would like to be informed on alternative methods of sharpening these bad boys!

You could probably use the sheath and sandpaper, if it came to it.
(Maybe even fingers and sandpaper, although I've had better luck with leather/rubber and sandpaper.)

When you sharpen this way, do you run the sandpaper along the edge (parallel to the edge), or into the edge (almost as though you wanted to fillet the sandpaper)?
