After all these years of collecting, carrying and using knives, I just bought my first Spyderco Sharpmaker. I have used freehand sharpening, most of the time, with any serious reprofiling done with a Lansky.

This Sharpmaker has made my sharpening tasks so much easier! Yes, you are limited to 30 and 40 degrees, and you have to be very careful not to round the knife tips. Other than these points, and for most of my knife needs, the Spyderco is fabulous. It is a good example of an inexpensive sharpening tool that is extremely well designed and thought out. I would recommend it to anyone. Money well spent.

Sal, my comment about "being careful not to round off the knife tips" most likely is just based on the fact that I am a "greenhorn" at using the Sharpmaker. I am sure, after a short period of time, my use of the system will become more natural and "fluid".

The Sharpmaker is an excellent tool, I keep one in my kitchen mostly for my kitchen knives.

Even though I consider any sharpening system a crutch, they all have their place, I have thousands of hours freehand sharpening, and I prefer to sharpen that way most of the time, but there are times I need the help due to lack of time or like my Old Man used to say, "It's the right tool for the job"

I've had a Sharpmaker for 10 years and Sal has a quality product, no doubt about that, but I'll still maintain that freehand is still a great skill to learn because we can't always have our Sharpmakers in our pocket.

We keep praising the Spyderco Sharpmaker and I betcha not ONE of us has asked Sal if he minds us using the name.

Think it bothers him??

:D :D :D :D

try sandpaper wrapped around the stones for fast metal removal on VERY dull blades/or for reprofiling, really works great. i never do the kitchen knives till they are DULL and was starting out on a 8" soft ark/transitioning to the SM, w/the paper on the rods its fast, have heard it works better than the $60+ diamond rods, i mean 15-20 strokes a side MAX, then on to the next grade stones.

really like the SM, fast and easy to set up, i am satisfied w/it, esp for the $$$$
