WHY does it work so well?
I was disenchanted with the amount of wobble the rods have when inserted in the base.......I mean, the angle the rods are held at look like they change angle quite a bit with a slight amount of pressure applied.
So I went looking for another solution......got a lansky diamond setup and a razor's edge with a cub guide.
Heck, the smaller blades I have can't work with either one of them......the blade just isn't wide enough to tighten the clamp securely on them.
I find the thought of laying out the bucks for an apex to be worrisome, since blade sides really don't seem to be flat, so I can't figure how that makes a secure, consistant angle, either.
But sheesh........with patience and prodigious use of the diamond rods, the sharpmaker makes anything I throw at it (figuritively speaking) shaving sharp.
I do wish the diamond rods cut faster.......I bought a case copperlock ss a short while ago, and it took 200 strokes per side on the diamond rods to raise a good burr.
And it seems to have made some very light scratches about halfway across the blade from edge to back. I don't know how that could happen, since I am reasonably sure I didn't slop the side of the blade into any of the rods.
Eh.....I guess flitz will take them out.... huh?
But the sharpmaker sure made it sharp!
I'd love to see one with double thickness stones and a heavier duty base........

I didn't like how the stones wobbles either, but in time I accepted it. I think it works so well because it is simple.
