I am looking for a new knife sharpner. I have had good success with my lansky, but now I have gravitated towards longer and thicker fixed blades where this system is no longer effective. Would the sharpmaker be good to do what I need? Also, I have noticed in the past that some people praise the sharpmaker #1 more so than the current model. Is there a difference? Also do you need to purchase any additional rods to make this system better than how they come originally packaged? Lastly, how much should I expect to pay for one. Thanks in advance for your input.

I'm not that experienced when it comes to sharpening but i have had good results with my triangle sharp maker. payed about $50 for it online.

Get the Spyderco 204 Sharpmaker >> I guarantee you that you will not regret it. But please when you do also get the 204 diamond stones and the 204 Ultra-fine stones that you can buy extra with the Sharpmaker.

Because without those extra stones you just are not doing the kit justice. Also do like I did and invest a little money in a nice zipper case in which you can take it all with you on trips and outdoor excurions. Good Luck

I guess yes, but depends on what you want to do in detail.

Yes.

Diamond rods or Ultra Fine Rods were available to make this system better. For my needs I decided to buy the Ultra Fine Rods.

I recommend to pay the full price the seller wants ;)

Anything with a blade length over 5in will not become any easier to sharpen. Benchstones would be your best bet.

Has anyone used those Diamond Interrupted Surface stones? How would those Rank for larger fixed blades?

It's for that reason that I'm perplexed as to why Spyderco's old Galley V sharpener didn't sell well  Because it worked on a similar principle as the Sharpmaker but it had very long ceramic rods and it was great for sharpening long fixed blades. I kept my Galley V and I'm glad I did because you don't even see them on Ebay anymore. The stones out of that kit were elipitical, cat's eye shaped and are good for sharpening all kinds of blades.

Yeah Spyderco's 302 Benchstones would be great for longer bladed folders or fixed blades. But all of Spyderco's sharpening tools are truly great.

Hopefully someday they'll make a big version of the 204 Sharpmaker.

I have not heard of this device... Can you (or someone else) post a picture of it? Sounds interesting.
