Hey guys, never done any sharpening before and I'm planning on picking up a Spyderco sharpmaker. I was wondering if I should also pick up a pair of the ultra fine stones? Also, I can't find any strops at the places I've been buying knives. Anyone have a good place to pick up a strop and some of that green honing compound?

For strops I would check out Mr2Blue here on the forums. He makes custom leather strops that are excellent and reasonably priced.

the ultra fine and diamond corse stones are very nice additions to the sharpmaker. I'd suggest both

Use the two sets of rods Med/Fine for about three months before you invest in ultra fine or coarse rods.

I never felt the need for anything finer than the white ones, but I did buy the diamond stones.

100% agree. The regular white stones will give you a very sharp edge, but the ultra fines are above and beyond. And snag the diamonds just in case you ever need to repair damage or decide you want to reprofile.

i'd go with diamond first if i had no choice. there are times where you have no other choice than reprofiling, if a factory bevel is steeper than 20° the brown stone will make you hate both the knife and the sharpmaker.

I agree with the above. Just a hint in the mean time since the diamond stones are kind of pricey you can always wrap the standard stone in high grit sandpaper to make steel removing a little faster.

Love my sharpmaker, that said the diamond stones wear and no I'm not ptting to much pressure on them for the cost they are ouch . The white stones will get ur blades shaving sharp get the ultra fine if u want a spyderco fresh out of box sharp . If u plan on reprofiling u can use the diamonds but expect to put in a good hour of work start to finish , I use the edge pro for that and my sharpmaker for touch ups another thing I love bout sharpmaker is its ability to handle my spyderhawk and my diffrent recurve blades

I too use my edge pro to reprofile and polish the edge. I typically reprofile to about 18degrees and then put a micro-bevel on using my sharpmaker. Makes for very easy touch-ups with the sharpmaker only.
