Spyderco Sharpness

I often read on this and other forums (fora?) that Spydercos are invariably very sharp right out of the box.

I have found an exception. I ordered a Kopa turquoise from a dealer who must have old stock and it came quite dull. I tried to open an envelope yesterday with it and noticed that. I used one of its sister Kopas, and it was quite sharp. I tried to cut a piece of stationary/typing/copier paper with its point, and it was dull. Not so the other Kopas.

I'm not much on sharpening, but I will get it done. FWIW, the box it came in was for a Blue Bone Kopa, so who knows its history. It was purchased from a dealer and looked brand new.

On another topic, I managed to get a Jess Horn and I really love the blade. However, there does not seem to be the same blade available in the current Spyderco catalog. The closest seem to be BM470 Emissary and the BM707 Sequel, the latter I really like.

Anyway, as a born curmudgeon, I can be a naysayer for those who in the future declare Spydercos to be perfectly sharp right out of the box. ;)

It can happen. Each knife is hand sharpened. The person who sharpened yours might not have been on their game that day. Although, I find that Spyderco offers the most consistent out of the box sharpness alongside Kershaw. Benchmade doesn't even compare in this department.

I figure any time a human being is responsible, then it can't be 100% all the time. Last year I bought around 100 Spydies and there were only 2 that weren't razors right out of the box. That's a pretty good track record in my book. Oddly enough both of the less than sharp knives were the same model. Bought from different dealers at different times.

All the spydercos I have gotten were razor sharp out of the box. The two benchmades ive gotten have had terrible edges, had to reprofile both of them. guess you just got unlucky

From what I have seen Spyderco is very consistant in producing very sharp edges out of the box.

Of all the Spyderco knives I have purchased new (lots) have been very sharp right out of the box.

I confess that I only own 8 Spyderco knives, and all were shaving sharp out of the box. The edges were really pretty good. It wasn't as if they were stropped on a .5 micron material - but very close.

The Jess Horn folders have ben discontinued to make room for other knives from what I've read at the Spyderco factory forums. Not sure what you mean about the other knives you mention.
