Wanted to get your guys thoughts on an idea I had for my southard. I have a techno aswell and one if the things I like best about it is the full titanium handles.
I havent found anyone who works with titanium yet but what I would like to get done to my southard is get a titanium scale to replace the stock G10 scale. So with the new titanium scale on the titanium liner it would essentially be full titanium. I would also like to get the lock bar stabilizer done in titanium but have it bronze anodized to give it some nice contrast against the stonwashed titanium.
What do people think about this, good idea? bad idea? Or any other suggestions? open to any ideas:D Also does anyone know of someone who pimps knives AND works with titanium?

sounds good but I would replace the liner and the scale with a single thick ti scale, if possible.
Titanium is a pain to work however, definitely need someone with the right tools.

Sell it and buy another CRK?

Sorry, couldn't help it Joey. :)

Personally I like everything about the Southard except for the feel as it locks open. Just feels hollow or something. As for the scale, I'd love to see you do it and share the pics. I think it would be interesting, but I'd definitely take the opportunity to do something crazy with the ti. Flame it, or anodize it something funky.

I just dyed my stock scale. Was really happy with the results.

Yea i also thought I felt something "hollowish" when the knife locks open, just didnt know how to describe it. It only happens tho when I rock back on the flipper and let it glide open slowly. If I press down harder and open it with a fair amount of pressure it feels much more "solid' somehow
will be sure to get pics up if I ever get it done! as of yet havnt found anyone who works with titanium. If you know of anyone lettme know!

Strigamort, what did you use to dye the stock scale? Method? Thanks for any info..........

There are a lot of G10 dying threads. I think I explained how I did mine in this thread, I may have a more detailed one but I can't remember.

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1046610

I've dyed a few knives. G10 works well, Spyderco frn even better. Delrin has been great too, although I tried dying my Sodbuster and had poor results. I don't believe the scale material on the Case is actually Delrin. Someone recently posted that it's not and my experience backs that up.

I still have a full box of color remover but haven't had any light colored G10 to apply dye to, then try to remove. The color remover will definitely not remove color from a factory piece of G10. I just want to know if it will remove a dye job that you apply yourself. I've read that it works, but I am doubtful. Still, it's worth trying because, if it will remove dye, that would be great information for someone that wants to dye a knife like a Strider but doesn't want to lose their warranty.

Let me know if you have any questions or need help. It's pretty straightforward, but people do have problems doing it. Just remember to cook the G10 for a long time if need be. Also, while I can't be held responsible for what you choose to do, I have never seen any ill effects from dying or boiling. My experience is fairly limited with frn (only dyed sprint white) but G10 seems to be very stable at water boiling temps. In other words, I've never seen any warpage or melting.

Thanks, what about cf scale for southard? Or any different colored aftermarket scales for it? Would really like a green one or cf one.
Thanks,
Sauce

Has anyone heard of methods to recolor black frn? I recall seeing pictures of the grooves on the black frn handles of a Spyderco Dragonfly 2 being filled with a color but am finding trouble locating threads discussing ways to do this.

I haven't, no. I imagine that the knife you're talking about had another material added that fully, or partially filled the gaps in the volcano grip. I seem to remember someone temporarily filling the gaps in a colored frn handle, then dying the rest with black dye, they then removed the temp filler and had a two tone scale.

The mailman will be here today at 2:30 local time and I have a polished carbon fiber scale as well as an over travel button coming. I will install, take pics and post it asap for those interested. This scale is thin so the knife will now be symetrical not like it is from Spyderco. I have two ti sheets that I'm going to send to the same maker and see if he can reproduce some scales to make the knife full ti. IDK if I'm going to layer the ti or do a single thickness yet. The same maker also has shortened lanyard tubes for the thinner scales.

I love the stock G10 scale. Carbon fiber and titanium are too slick. Oh, I believe that "hollowish" sound is because of the internal stop pin. You're used to hearing the sound of the blade or thumb stud hitting the frame on other frame locks.

I've had mixed experiences with that, I have other knives with internal stop pins that sound very different. I also have knives that sound "hollow" that don't have internal stop pins. Now I'll have to do some "research" (play with my knives more) :D
