Spyderco Southard or Domino?

Hey everyone,

I currently have around, hmm, $360 to spare on a blade or two. I have been eyeing the Spyderco Southard and the Spyderco Domino for a while now, and I am not sure which to get. I can pick up the Domino for $184 at CutleryShoppe. I am not sure about the Southard, as I would prefer to get a like new one here on the forums for $200 or less. If I could only get one, which is the most likely, I am not sure of which to get. So, here are my questions.

1) Which knife should I get: the Spyderco Southard or the Spyderco Domino?
2) What steel is better: CTS-204P or CTS-XHP?
3) If you recommend the Domino, should I spend the extra $20ish for the blue weave one? Which pattern looks better on the domino in your opinion?
4) What blade shape is the most useful for any sort of EDC cutting?
5) Which knife is higher value?

Thanks for taking the time to answer these questions.

I EDC a Spyderco Domino. I love everything about the knife except the steel.
I found that the knife dulled very quickly after moderate use.
I like it better than the southard only due to the ability to change the pocket clip orientation to where I wanted.

I've had two of each...I prefer the Southard. Definitely is better steel.

The spyderco subforum would be the perfect place to pose this question, happy hunting :)

I'm not a big fan of flipper levers. They don't ride right and you cant easily place them in a belt case. The Southard is a great knife, a lot of folks view it as a "Must Have" but IMHO the Domino is the better EDC.

I had the Southard for a few days, didn't care for it so I sold it. I have a Manix 2 sprint in CTS-XHP and have been very impressed with the steel. No experience with CTS-204p, I would say go with the blue domino.

$360 sounds like enough to buy both and sell the one you like less. I own a southard and think its great. I have never handled a domino but like the looks of its full flat grind which I generally prefer to a hollow grind ( which the southward has ). Get both is a pretty standard response in these parts.

I prefer the Southard over the Domino. There have been some really good deals in the exchange lately, grab a lightly used one and save some cash.

1. Southard
2. I prefer CTS-204p hands down, though CTS-XHP is solid.
3. Yes, get the blue if you decide on the Domino. The Cosby sweater CF sucks.
4. Both are pretty usefull, but the Southard is longer. Though I prefer FFG. The Southard looks sexier.
5. Southard

I've owned both. Both are great. The Domino flips smoother and easier and has a steel lockbar insert, but the Southard looks better, has better steel, and did I mention it looks better?

@OP: definitely Southard over Domino, I own both and it's not even close.

@atony: Hopefully you know this already, but the bottom Southard in your images is a Chinese counterfeit from the looks of it.

Okay okay, thanks for the great suggestions guys. I've decided on the Southard over the Domino. However, I have seen that there is a Sprint Run Yojimbo 2 coming out in S90V and CF. So, sorry to ask, but should I wait?

SShhhhhhhhh!!!!! ;)

Antony, the carbon fiber Southard in your picture is a blatant Chinese fake!!
