Hi

I was just wondering if any of you know what made the southard so expensive (msrp $419)
Just to compare the zt 0562cf has a similar steel but has carbon fiber, but still is about 100$ cheaper msrp
Is it the fit and finish or something because I can't think of any thing that would make the knife so expensive...

Msrp really doesn't mean anything. Basically just spyderco setting the ceiling for its distributors. If you look at retail the knives are only about $20 apart.

Typical street price is $225, though it's "readily" available on the exchange here LNIB for $175 on average.

As compared to the 0562CF, there are many factors. For one, MAP enforcement places the 0562CF at $240 so prices are quite equal forget MSRP not to mention that you wont find it on the secondary market at a big discount for awhile. You're really looking at about the same price for both. 0562CF still looks like the better deal with the CF and Hinderer name, which enforces their reputation as value leaders somewhat. It was even more so pre MAP enforcement.

We do not know what royalty margins the companies are paying Hinderer and Southard, one may be paying more than the other, Southad has one knife with Spyderco while Rick has too many to count with KAI.

Next is that they are totally different companies; one is an international conglomerate with a reported 41 billion yen in sales and 2,615 employees worldwide and that was 2008 numbers. Spyderco is a much smaller company, Im sure that plays a part in how products are priced but coming from Sal their founder, he has said several times before that they have a set profit margin so whatever the maker charges will reflect the MSRP... That's another thing, 0562CF's are made in house while the Southard gets the steel shipped to Taiwan to a separate maker who then ships the finished product back here in the US.
