I recently picked up a used Spyderco Southard here on BF. When it arrived the flipping action was not so great. Especially when compared to my tri-way Hinderers.

After a good cleaning, the removal of copious amounts of old caked on loctite and installing a new set of Taco ceramic bearings this knife flips like a dream, is perfectly centered and opens smoothly with the thumb hole. No loctite required!

I’ve got a MX Gear titanium clip (not deep carry) on the way to solve the pointy stock clip issue.

Loving this classic Spyderco and highly recommend the Taco bearing upgrade.

You made me look. Had to look up "taco bearings" and there really is such a thing. Who knew? At least, not me. LOL! ;)

Kinda pricey and I'm not so unhappy w/the way my Southard flicks to pay the extra $ for them but, if you're happy, that's all that matters.

I'm with sgt. Those aftermarket bearings are too pricey (including skiff bearings). $5-$8 a pair I might be buying. Plus, I've been happy with all factory bearings (Hinderer, ZT, etc.).

Thank you for the info, I am in the same boat as OP, got a Southard here and while the knife seems in perfect condition the flipping action is not good at all. I will try to do a good cleaning and if that does not help I will get this Taco ceramic bearings. Thanks again OP for the info!

New MX Gear clip just arrived and in my opinion it is a huge improvement over the stock clip! AC732881-F544-4A10-87F1-D89D6EC01F77.jpeg
