Spyderco Southfork Regrind question

Hello all, ive had my southfork for about a month now and havent decided how i feel about s90v. I love the knife design and feel but feel that it looses its edge just as quickly as some of my other spydercos in lesser steels, perhaps its because i touch them up as soon as they loose their razor edge. Should i keep pushing it longer before sharpening and see how long the working edge holds? I usualy touch up on spyderco sharp maker and then strop. Im interested in getting it reground to squeeze some more performance out of it, i hear the Phill Wilson customs are a lot thinner behind the edge. But am curious if it will be worth it or just make the knife more delicate and less well rounded. I work in a green house and its primary chores are cutting plant material occasionally woody material but mostly soft herbaceous stuff, opening boxes, breaking down cardboard, opening paper/plastic and woven bags of soil components, and food prep/general home chores at home. Also does anyone have an idea how much it would run to get it reground thinner and maybe a recommendation of someone whose comfortable regrinding s90v? Thanks - Stanley

S90V degrades to a working edge, but holds that edge for a very long time. Thinning out your knife will help contribute to the "feeling" of sharpness even if the actual edge is a "working edge."

Why not just reprofile your bevels to be thinner behind the edge? Oftentimes you may be surprised at how much of a performance gain you can get by doing so.

Based on this http://youtu.be/NpDvJAh_0Ck comparison on Youtube, the Spyderco Southfork he had was .023" behind the edge where the custom was .007" behind the edge. I think you could easily have it thinned down to say 0.015" or 0.010" behind the edge to improve performance without loosing much in real durability/stability. I would review recent regrind threads on this forum and the Spyderco company forum to see who is still doing regrinds and current pricing. The topic of regrinds does pop up fairly often. In Feb 2014, someone had a Southard reground by someone called BigChris and they were pleased. Please let us see the resulting regrind if you have it done! Best wishes! Doug

You should be able to have it reground down in the .010" - .015" range.

Getting the edge bevel thinner will make a world of difference, at least it did on mine. I just ground the edge down on my Harbor Freight 1x30 belt sander, then took it to my EdgePro. Not pretty, but it sure works great now!

Thanks for the advice, il contact big chris and try to squeeze more performance out of it.
