Spyderco SPOT - Simple (free!) belt attachment idea

I purchased a Spyderco SPOT (collectors edition/all black finish/new style sheath) a couple of weeks ago, and decided to try to figure out the best way to mount it horizontally on my belt, since I'm not a big fan of carrying it on my neck.

I found a real simple way to do it, which may have been discovered before, but I just had to share it:

Take two zip-ties (aka wire ties, the plastic strips with the little hole in one end -- you insert one end of the zip-tie into the hole on the other end and it permanently holds itself in place with a tiny set of teeth) and loop each one through the grommits on the sides of the SPOT sheath.

That is, put the end of one wire tie through the top left grommet, then the top right grommit, and back around (so that it forms a loop through the grommits. Do the same with the bottom two grommits.

When you're all done, you'll have the same sheath you had in the first place, except with two plastic loops running around it, permanently affixed. Now, thread your belt through the zip ties for secure, horizontal carry. I've given it a few good rips out of the sheath to test it, and I'd be more worried about my belt loops ripping off than my zip-ties coming apart. Use a lighter to melt the loop-end permanently shut to make it even more secure. You may even want to go get some black zip-ties (They are about $1 for 100 at computer or office supply stores) for a more discreet look.

Sorry about the pic quality, they were taken with my cellular phone's camera. I hope this helps someone, it has sure helped me -- it's free, easy, and doesn't interfere with neck carry or anything else. Enjoy!

The blackened version of the spot (used with the black zip ties) will fit right in there on my backpack shoulder straps as concealed safety tool. No stares, no funny looks but when it's time to whip it out....whammo.

Wow, that definitely is a new style sheath. Another way to do this is with a short piece of black paracord. Thread it through and tie it off to suit your fancy. I did mine up to ride inside-the-belt with the handle straight up, ready for a forward draw into reverse grip. Worked pretty well.

I set up my SPOT for belt carry by drilling two holes in the sheath and fitting it with a Mini TekLok. I much prefer the SPOT as a belt knife. :)
