Spyderco Spyker - Sharpen or Leave Alone

Id say use the snot out of it, then resharpen ...
... but as you want to sell, then state the condition - nick included - in the sales ad.
Post hi-res pics.
Some people might prefer to buy the knife with the nick and then sharpen it themselves, as they'd rather buy a knife with a factory edge than trust somebody elses sharpening skill ... or lack there of.

Not hinting at your sharpening skills, as I dont know you.

If you are the grand poobah of sharpening, then go ahead.

You will no doubt be advised by others to ship it to Spyderco for fixing prior to selling.

If you can bear the extra cost, I think it adds a lot of value to a knife to be sold as "just returned from the spa".
New factory edge and other pampering makes it as close to LNIB as can be. Of course some manufacturers can't sharpen ,
though that is typically not the case with Spyderco.

BladeScout makes a few good points too .

Good luck.

Thanks. Both of you make good points. I will definitely NOT be attempting to sharpen myself. I’ll contact Spyderco to see if their sharpening is free. This knife is 13 years old and I believe never used.

Keep in mind that there is a distinct possibility that it may come back from sharpening with a fresh mark or two. Weigh that into your cost:benefit analysis.

In the same position, I’m not 100% sure what I would do. I would probably just sell it as-is and knock 15-20% off the asking price, but, I’m not super keen on spending ~$8 to ship priority and wait two weeks to get it back.

I have a Matriarch that is missing a couple screws that I desperately need to send in for repairs, but have not been able to bother myself with it for more than a month now. I might just be lazy in some regards.

So I have a brand new Spyderco Spyker from 2005 and it has a tiny nick on the blade. I didn't even notice it until pointed out to me. Here are pics:

My question to everyone is... Do I sell it as-is, or do I contact Spyderco and try and get it repaired/sharpened?

Honestly I sent my Southard into Spyderco with a mirror edge and a note not to sharpen. They did anyway and returned it with an absolutely garbage edge.

Not saying that is usual but just saying.

Not sure which is considered more valuable. Factory edge with one nick or refurbished edge. Either way you can’t claim it is a factory edge.

Resale always factory edge more desireable.
Like one poster said, it's harder to trust another factor. You can never put back the metal that's shaved off too.

If you want to sell it, just ago ahead and sell it as is. Judging by the pictures the damage is pretty small and easy to fix.

Let the buyer choose whether to send it back to Spyderco, fix it themselves or have somebody else repair it.

Sending it to Spyderco yourself is a waste of time and money. I don't think the price difference between selling it with the nick or selling it with a factory refurbished edge is going to matter that much, especially once you take into account the time and money you had to invest (mostly the time).

Personally i would have that Spyker resharpened by one of the pro-knife sharpeners that frequent the Maintenance, Tinkering & Embellishment subforum.
They will have no problem dealing with the current edge damage plus they can provide your knife with an edge angle & edge finish best suited to the steel type and/or your use.
And also because i'm certain that a knife that has been worked on by Josh, Jason, Heavyhand, etc is valued more by the informed knife buyer.

I would say keep it as si. Mention it in the description but don't worry much about it. If I was interested in that particular knife, I woudln't care.
