Hello all. I recently purchased a spydie from another person on this forum. It is listed as Spyderco Standard, old style w/ stainless scales and punched stainless clip, serrated, used, with a bevelled hole by previous owner.

I've been looking for a picture or description for the better part of two days, without luck. What did I buy?

Can someone at least tell me how long the blade is?

Actually sounds like one of the old "economy" Standards with a punched clip. It was a reduced price point knife for spyderco back in I believe the mid-late 80's. Be interested in seeing a pic. I do have one in my collection.

Wow! Thanks for those sites. Just as I thought I was getting to know the range of Spydies, a whole new bunch appear.
Wooden inset handles, black blades, and the "Deragon Fry" :-)
Can there ever be a definitive catalogue?

As Jyork mentioned, the original "Standard" was called the "Economy". It was our way of trying to ward off the knock offs. We offerred the model as a $20 alternative to our already $40 Worker model.

The back side scale was made with two thin liners, the outer one was punched into the shape of a clip. It was the cheapest way I could think of at the time to create an effective clip without the high cost making a 3 screw clip + clips + the cost of assembly.

The clip idea was later used by a number of manufacturers.

The Endura and Delica ("Endels" in house) was our next attempt to create an effective Clipit that was also cost effective.

The Delica II (SS version with AUS-6 blade steel) eventually replaced the "Economy"/"Standard".

At this time, I would have to say that the Endura and Delica are probably the most copied design of the past decade.

A little history that few might remember.

Does anyone have more pics of the Spyderco Standard? Because I have also found one of those (rare?) thingies.... :) (but I have not ordered it yet)
I would be interested to see what the clip looks like, although Sal described it very well, thanks!

In G-10 Standard clip is same as in G-10 harpy: deep pocket, black (matte), tip down (as Spydercos should be). Harpy and Standard share the same handle. I dont have SS versions of these knives and my pics also are from the other side...

G-10 standard is one of the best small Spydercos.

BTW Salaisessa Agentissa (Helsingissä) oli pitkään (en ole käynyt lähiaikoina) sileäteräinen G-10 Standard 520 mk.

Recoil was kind enough to e-mail me a photo of a left handed standard.

My standard should arrive tomorrow, when the mail room opens. I will photograph it with particular attention to the clip and post them for your enjoyment.

I really appreciate the response on this thread. Thanks all.

Here ya go!
as you can see, the early standard (known as the Economy) was not finished as nicely as other spydies to cut down on cost. The pins can be seen clearly as well as the stamped steel clip and unchamfered handle. This is a lefty model.

Thank's everyone for the information and the pictures! :)

Tommi : Otin yhteyttä SalaiseenA ja näyttää siitä ett Standardi oli mennyt kaupaksi jo, mutta saas nähdä jos maahantuojalta löytyis jostain nurkasta.
