Has anyone had any experience with the Spyderco Standard? I bought one this weekend and, althought it's way early for the final review, the thing seems to be well built with a rock solid lockup, ATS 55 steel, G10 scales, and that buzzsaw spyderedge...
Another question. Why did Spyderco use a one-sided liner? I mean, the knife is solid as-is, but wouldn't two liners be even better?
Thanks!

It's my EDC, a PE one. The liner isn't there to strengthen the knife; it's there to hold the clip in place. But, yeah, I would've liked another one too. I can put up with a little extra weight for the added (perceived, anyway) strength.

Thanks JamesA,
How long have you had yours? Any major complaints?

I've had this particular one about two years, and it's the longest I've ever had one. Not one complaint.

The G10 Standard is a pit bull of a knife, probably my favorite. hard to find anymore.

I have a G10 Standard PE that may very well be my favorite Spyderco. It gets carried quite a bit when discretion is important. I think that it was probably underappreciated, hence its discontinuing. Seems like a Delica with mass, and makes a neat set with a G10 Rookie and G10 Harpy. My first quality knife was an early Standard many years ago. After going through every fad knife out there I'm still carrying a Standard regularly.

I am no marketing genius, but namimg it the "Standard" probably didnt stir up much buzz. Given the choice between the "DomiDeathinator 2000" and the "Normal" we know which one will get the attention.

Great point, W.S.
Maybe they should go back into production with it and call it the "mini-military". It really has some of the same design and construction features as the military.
I'm not sure how I got so lucky to find mine if it's been discontinued, but I'm not gonna look a gift horse in the mouth...

And it's flat ground as opposed to hollow, has no 'full' liners as opposed to one, and mine's of s30v as opposed to ats-55 for the standard...
Okay, I see your point.
My unclear point was that, should Spyderco choose, a clever marketing ploy would be to play up the similarities (basically the blade/ handle shape and the g-10 scales) between the Standard and the extemely popular Military.

Hello

When we first released the C05 Standard in the early 80s it came with a stainless handle and a metal clip integrated into the handle. It was released as a less expensive alternative to our CLIPIT line and was at the time, aptly named "The Standard". Our marketing direction at then was to introduce it as a no-frills lower-price-point knife and we sold heaps of them. Later it was slightly upgraded with different blade steel and a screw-on clip added and even later a G-10 limited run was put out. Eventually it was discontinued entirely because it was so similar in shape and size to the Delica (many confused it with the stainless Delica) that it became redundant in our product line. The G-10 version was a high-quality piece that sold well but we always have to eliminate to make way for new products- it was sadly retired.

DeWeese is right! It might have gotten more attention if we'd named it the "DomiDeathinator 2000" CLIPIT- LOL. Never happen at Spyderco we're pretty conservative in naming our knives. We have bugs and birds, Kershaw has onions... :D

Joyce @ Spyderco

Ms. Laituri,

The one you described with the integral clip was the one I had. It also taught me how great Spyderco service was when the backspring broke, and Spyderco's response was to send me a brand new knife. I had already replaced it so I gave it to my brother, who carries it to this day, some 15 years later.

My suggestions for future Spyderco names:
Normal
Vanilla
Moderate
Compassionate Conservative
Mainstream
Benign
Whatever
MOR (Middle of the Road)
Mean (as in average)
Phlegmatic

Hey, they're all Temperate;)

Bill

Joyce,
Thanks for the history on the Standard. Regardless of it's current production status, it's still a Spyderco classic in my book!

Mine sits in the Knife Trunk at home. Don't want to risk losing it. Wish I had another- it would certainly see mucho pocket time. I miss that, the Navigator in G-10, the G-10 Rookie & the Wegner.
