Dear Mr. Glesser,

While in the US I bought a brand new Spyderco Starmate and I must say that I like the Starmate well.
I have yet have to use it on anything else then slicing an piece of writing paper and have opened it a few hundreth times the last couple of months and afterwards put it back in it's box.
For it's size its incredibly light but one thing I noticed from the start and that is that when I open or close it with my right hand (I'm right handed) that the blade touches the right grip plate causing a "grinding" sound. when I open it with my left hand which is kind of akward for me it doesn't touch the right hand grip inside.

I tried thightning the axis screw but only when I tighten it so fast that I have difficulty mving the blade out of the grip it does not touch the inside of the righthand grip.

Is there some way to adjust it by myself so that the blade doesn't touch the grip when opening or closing or do I have to send it to Spyderco for adjustements?

Best regards from Holland,

Piet (Bagheera)

Bagheera - You might check to see exactly where it is rubbing. perhaps a burr might be the problem or ?. See if you can see exactly where contact is.

If the pivot is too loose, then the blade is free to move sideways.

Dear Mr. Glesser,

When looking at the blade when I have the knife closed it looks to me like it's not exactly centered in between the grip plates.
There is less space between the blade and the right hand grip.
It seems that the blade rubs the grip just "below" (more to the end of the grip were the lanyard hole is) where the locking liner is inletted in the G10 grip.
It hits the G10 liner with it's thickest part of the blade there were the hollow grind goes into the flat back piece. I checked this by throwing light trough a glasfiber attachement on a maglite in betwen the grip plates.

That's as good as I can explain myself as English is not my mother language, sorry for that.

Best scouting wishes from Holland,

Bagheera (Piet)

Some more things to try:
--when the blade is opened, hold the lock spring, so it doesn't touch the blade tang. Is there any lateral movement, does it wiggle?

--How far over does the lock engage the blade tang?

--How much space is between the handles and the blade?

Since you live in Europe, it's pain in the rear to send it to Golden, Col., but if the pivot is tight, and it's still rubbing, you can attempt to take it apart, if you're able, and reassemble it, making sure everything is flush. Also, make sure to keep track of the really thin washers used in the blade pivot. Another thing that causes a rubbing blade is a lock spring that is bent too far, or the actual liner is warped, though the Starmate uses a recessed leaf instead of a full liner.

Take note here. The Starmate uses the same eccentric pivot pin as does the Military. If the pin is moved a bit too much in either direction, lockup may become worse! I believe the folks at Golden uses a special "tool" to hold the innards in place before making final adjustment. Sending it back is major inconvenience in this case. The "eccentric" pivot pin: a marvel for the self adjusting liner lock, a nightmare for some consumers!

Hi Piet!

Here is my suggestion: if the blade rubbs on the G-10 on only a small spott, then the solution might be to take a piece of sandpaper and grind the G-10 back a little.
hope this helps.
