I think I saw a post on BladeForums somewhere about the Police having a VG-10 blade. I looked on the website, and it didn't say it was VG-10, so I'm just a little confused. I don't really know that much about the different steel types, are there any good websites about it? Also, I've heard that AUS-6 is a pretty crappy steel. In fact, that's one of the biggest complaints I've heard about CRKT's knives, is that they almost all have AUS-6 blades. But, the blade on my Endura is AUS-6, as well. Are there any plans in the works for Endura blades with a better steel?

Thanks!

The SS Police has been upgraded to VG-10, just the site hasn't been updated :) I think I heard the site won't be updated until the knives go into production

My Endura (FRN) has ATS-55 steel, maybe you have the older version?

In the Edge-U-Cation part of Spyderco's website they have a steel comparison chart :)

Hope that helps you out :)

According to this site: http://www.ndsproducts.com/spyderco.html

They have a G10 Vesuvius, they don't have a picture so you have to scroll down a little bit from the bottom of the page and read the descriptions. :)

The Frank Centofante Vesuvius features a ATS-34 stainless, 3.125 in. Plain edged blade with thumb hole pull, compression lock, pocket clip and lanyard hole. G-10 with shell insets on handle.

That was one of the three descriptions :)

Hi BryanH. You need to hang around for a while to get more of an understanding of steels. Always more complicated than one would think.

AUS6 is a fairly good steel. With .6 - .65 carbon, it will produce a good edge and hold it fairly well. Corrosion resistance is also acceptable and better than many of the "exotic" steels. It's about on a par with 440A.

Steels with .8 carbon or more would have to be classified more as exotic steels, especially if they are stainless. The price of the steel goes up and the cost of turning the steel into a knife blade is more because the more exotic steels are harder to shape, grind, drill, heat treat, etc.

The Endura SS is more of an economy version of a stainless steel handled model, which accounts for the AUS6 blade steel. The FRN Endura is already using VG10. The Police will be making the transition soon, if not already. We like to hold off on making these type of changes on the Website to make sure that the existing models sitting on dealers shelves are sold.

Thanks for the answers. But, do you happen to know if the SS Endura, will ever have a VG-10 blade, or the Vesuvius have a G-10 handle?

Hi Bryan,

It is unlikely that the Endura SS will ever have a VG-10 blade because it is a "price-point" model.

The Vesuvius was originally planned for G10, but switched to FRN also over price point. There are certainly no plans for an addiitional Vesuvius model with G10 in the forseable future -- sorry.

Kinda sucks about that. Would've loved a G-10 handled Vesuvius. Still love the Endura, though.
