hey guys just picked up a fp street bowie cheap, fit a blade tech snap belt loop and wear it in the appendix position.i have no experience with the quality etc. of this knife but find it fast and very effective on my silent fighter cutting dummy.should i count on it or is the cs kobun a better choice?i wear these daily in my job as a marshal in atlanta.whats the verdict?is the street bowie any good?it came and went fairly quickly.oh..has spyderco ever heard of bead blast?

Keep the Street Bowie, no offense to the CS but Spyderco's are in a different league :D

I don't know why anyone would prefer a bead blast to a nice satin finish, but you can blast it yourself if you want. I have a Spyderco Ronin, which is bead blasted, so I think they have heard of it. ;)

I also agree that the Spyderco is a good choice. It will cut better, although the Cold steel might be better for prying at stuff. If the Cold Steel is the 420 stainless version, the Spyderco is the clear choice. If it is the Carbon V version, I would say it depends on what you use it for.

I have the Spyderco Perin & an original CS Kobun in AUS8.

Tough choice!

The Spyderco is VG10 which is much better steel. However, the Kobun is no slouch. Don't know about the 420 version though. I do know that the Carbon V version balances differently (static balance) and is more blade heavy than the SS version of the CS product...

The CS has a very comfortable handle. Especially if you prefer reverse grip edge in (Pikal) grip. The Spyderco's handle is likely more durable. All the CS versions are a full tang though. The Spydie - not so much.

Personally I prefer the Benchmade Griptillian fixed blade to either one (!) :)

thanks guys,as to the finish it looks a bit like kitchen cutlery to me but the sb moves like lightning in the drills and cutting tests.the kobun i ordered is 420.the knife will be carried daily but not as a utility blade, got a m16sf for that.

Hey Guys...

glockdad...

For sure the Spydie Perrin is a far better blade than the Kubon...

It's an all around better cutter and for thrusting you have a much better purchase on the handle than with the Kubon..

Are you carrying it in the OEM sheath with the tek lok ??

You may want to try one of mercop's Static 67 rigs. Tie it on,, get rig of the tek lok and tuck it appendix carry IWB...Excellent way to carry that knife...

I never had any complaints with the hollow ground Kobun's cutting performance. It has a nice thin edge and on soft fiberous vegetation, boxes & envelopes, the Kobun does just fine. I haven't used it for food prep or anything too extreme though. I'm sure it will perform in it's intended role admirably.

As for the handle comment, that is a very relative statement; if the design fits your hand and grip style, and you prefer a forward grip for defensive purposes then perhaps. OTOH, if you prefer a reverse grip (especially Pikal) or have larger hands I think the reverse would be true.

I think he's referring to the original Spyderco collaboration with Fred Perrin - FB04 which is based off of the Street Bowie design. So you can get it at quite a few online retailers (but it's not called the Street Bowie).

The new, smaller one is the Street Beat IIRC ;).

For WWIW, I handled the AUS8 version of the Kobun, and while decent, didn't particularly impress me - very neutral, but grippy handle - quite narrow overall. The Perrin is much nicer in the blade and handle, but is more limited for me regarding grips (FG, RG, etc). Never did try to IWB since it wasn't mine...

normark....thanks for the insight.ive had good luck with bladetech iwb snaps.they fit into the lash holes and are good for everyday appendix carry.i also just throw some 550 cord thru the hole and tuck it on duty.this allows me to carry deeper and also clear my body before the blade leaves sheath.the oem sheath is ok but needs a tighter grip.i see you bill as a custom sheath maker, got a link or something cause ive got a couple i need a good kydex concealment sheaths for.

as to where it laid underneath a bunch of other knives at a tac gear shop i do business with for about a year.

i do like the grip on the sb especially because even in appendix carry you can twist grip it and draw to reverse grip.the kobun is actually aus 8 so ill be testing it hard when i get it.thanks again guys

I replaced my Kobun w/the FPSB, which I greatly prefer. Better steel, better ergonomics, designed by someone with a great deal of knife combat training, feels great to me! I like my Kobun in AUS8 as a utility blade, mostly gardening stuff, but for SD purposes I think the FP is much handier.

been playing with and carrying my kobun for a couple of days.handle a tad short and top guard gets in the way.the blade is tough and super duper sharp.i was able to completely cleave a floating piece of copy paper into 2 pieces consistently.i trimmed the top guard and reshaped the top of the sheath to allow a full grip on the draw.this made it a really good carry knife.still more partial to the spydie though mostly because of the ergo of the grip.either way im well served by either knife
