I have had the Spyderco Stretch for over a year now and I really like the knife.

The problem I am having is it is too grippy. Getting it in and out of my pocket is a real pain, so I don't carry it much at all but I would like to.

Is there any way I can replace the handle material with another product? Any other ideas?

Are you talking about the original Stretch or the carbon fiber Stretch II? I personally don't find the texture of the carbon fiber to be excessively grippy, for me it is just right. My first suggestion would be to adjust the clip tension a little, and/or wet sand the surface of the scale under the clip just a little to smooth it up. Note that I said, "wet sand" as carbon fiber dust is not real good for your lungs.

I bought a Spyderco Spur from the House Of Blades in Ft. Worth that had the rubberized handle inserts replaced with Sambar Stag. If I remember correctly the stag insert was done by Shane Sloan (a knifemaker from New Castle Texas). Unfortunately, I don't have any contact info for Mr. Sloan.

I have a Spur with the rubber and agree, it is almost too grippy and doesn't always draw cleanly. I have considered replacing the rubber with another material but haven't gotten to it yet, to many projects in the works. You might ask in the Maintenance, Tinkering & Embellishment forum....I have seen some great modifications in there.

Personally, if you can't live with the stretch the way it is, sell it and buy the stretch 2. It's very much higher on the quality factor with the very comfortable carbon fibre with steel frame inserts, tip up/down full 4 way clip option, and overall better ergonomics ( the original was no slouch in this area)

Top it all off with a non laminated ZDP 189 blade that on mine, came sharp enough to whittle hairs out of the box, only two knives total have been this sharp in 35+ years of collecting. Full flat ground with a distal tasper, 3.5 inches long yet of a non scary looking appearance to those who need to take P.C. into consideration. Joe

Thanks for the replies. I guess I will just keep it on the shelf and buy another model. Too bad, it is a nice knife.
