I am a novice, old man, too, and want a good pocket knife to look at and whittle, etc. Aesthetics important but quality moreso. How is the Spyderco Black Stretch gonna do for me? Thanks for any help.

The stretch, along with most spydercos, is an excelent choice!

Very Sharp, good materials, good Fit and Finish, strong lock up...the stretch is an all around great knife:thumbup:

If you like the looks and the price of it, you should have no reservation on picking one up:D

Hello and welcome to the forum. I'm assuming you're talking about the Spyderco Stretch II with the black FRN (high-tech fiberglass plastic) handles and VG-10 blade steel. The Stretch II has a very strong following among knife nuts and I have yet to see a negative comment regarding this knife.

I own the carbon fiber ZDP-189 version and although I don't use it (I collect carbon fiber Spydercos), I like it very much. I would get the black FRN version for normal everyday use.

The 3 1/2 inch blade is perfect for all your everyday use.
The FRN handle is very grippy and will offer good traction, even when wet.
VG-10 steel is excellent and offers a fair amount of toughness balanced with edge retention.
Handle shape is very ergonomic and comfortable.
Full flat grind makes it an excellent slicer.
It can be taken apart for cleaning although putting it back together can be a challenge.
Lockback design offers a strong and reliable lockup.

I don't whittle so I can't tell you how good or bad the Stretch is for that specific task. If I didn't like my Sage 1 so much, the Stretch would be a strong favorite any day.

It's a good choice and I'm sure many would agree. :)

Hi and welcome to the forums! Spyderco Stretch is really awesome. I got one for 2 days, and it's my fave ever. Quality excellent, lock excellent, handle material grippy and comfortable. I never tried whittling, but it handled slicing very well thanks to the thin blade.

I'd say go for it. I have heard that whittling requires a smaller blade though-but that you'd know better than me:)

Thanks to all for the kind replies. Sorry for my late reply, I could not remember which forum I was on:-))

I have a cf 189 stretch. It really is a great knife. You can put an excellant edge on one. They fit the hand very well. I like the carbon fiber as it is very thin - it will disappear in your pocket. I do not have the FRN version, but suspicion it is just as nice.

I recently got a Stretch II (carbon fiber with ZDP189) and it's a really, really, REALLY nice knife.
It's a lot of blade for the size of the handle and it's easy to forget that you have a knife on you when you carry it, it's that EDC friendly. Not bulky in the least and very classy looking.
I can't say enough good things about this knife... what a beaut!:thumbup::thumbup:

I have far too many knives and if I had to choose just one, then the Stretch 2 could well be the one.

I see the price from Amazon is $103.91 shipped. Lowest price I have seen. Have any seen it that cheap?

For the black version, you should be able to find it $55-60 + shipping. Google harder ;)

Hi Rkhndjr,

The stretch design dates back kto 1983 in its origin. We designed a model called the "Hunter", then the "Pro-Hunter" (changed to Pro-Venator later). Then we did a number of models with different handles and blade shapes.

The most recent evolution of the design was when it was stretched to a larger knife, and the moniker changed to Stretch. The Stretch2 is the result of 27 years of continual refinement.

I carry the ZDP version quite a bit.

I just received my Stretch today. It never really appeared on my radar screen until I watched Nutnfancy's youtube review of the Stretch. I went with VG-10. It falls in there nicely between the Delica and Endura. Nice thin full flat grind slicer, and the handle shape provides for a solid grasp. Smooth opener, zero blade play as expected. Good stuff.
