I'm looking for a good small fixed blade EDC. I don't have much experience with fixed blades so I've come here to ask you what a good EDC fixed blade is. I've been eyeing the Spyderco Swick 4 for a while now and I think that'll be the knife I'm gonna get. The other knife I'm looking at is the ESEE Izula 2. Out of the two which knife do you think is better and why? If you have any recommendations for another knife feel free to tell me.

I would say that the Izula II would be the better choice as I feel it's probably more comfortable in hand than the Swick. The Izula is a mainstay favorite around here, and with good reason. I myself have one and I admit the bias. I do not own a Swick, but that just seems like one of those gimmicky neckers meant for self defense. Your mileage may vary.

I have to agree with Quiet on this. And I carry my Swick 4 every day

If you do pick one up the Halpern scales are an excellent addition.

Thanks for the input. I think I'll buy an Izula II for now and buy a Swick 4 when I have money in my knife funds.

Good choice. I love my Swick but it really is better suited for a defense role.

The Izula is designed for EDC type tasks.

You might check out surfinggringo's post on the Spyderco website. He is actively using his Swick 4 while out kayak fishing. Mike

I have to disagree completely. Your'e really undermining a great all around utility knife in the Swick. sure like almost any knife it can be pressed into the role of SD but the finger ring brings a practical utility to the knife and the ergos are excellent for an everyday cutter. S30V steel and compact yet easy to retrieve.

I don't get how the Izula is better than the Swick at all. Its a god knife but I would say the Swick is better on every front

That big ring doesn't really make for comfortable use during hard cutting. Sorry, but it doesn't. It also means as a result that the strength of the entire piece is dependent on those two tiny sections of steel that make up either side of the ring. There are countless videos of people batoning with Izulas. I certainly wouldn't feel comfortable subjecting the Swick to hard use of that type. So, no, the Swick actually isn't better on every front, sorry brother.

P.S. I had a chance to handle a Swick at a Spyderco dealer and was underwhelmed.

I don't think I am undermining anything.

With the Izula you have a choice of multiple grips. With the Swick, if you don't have your finger in the hole, you risk your index finger slipping foreward onto the blade.

I just don't find the Swick comfortable in long carving sessions.

Do you have scales on your Swick? Or did you cord wrap it? Just wondering :)
