I've been pondering getting a Spyderco Szabo in all its glorious Scimitar-shaped 4.6" blade and compression lock even though I may think the blade length is way too long.

I was browsing BladeHQ and saw that there'll be a version with black blade and the CF pattern like the Domino which I like a lot. Also, I love all the high-quality collaboration knives coming out of the Taichung factory. Arguably, Spyderco's best stuff!

So, what are your thoughts on the Szabo in general and in particular what's the latest news on the black blade version (C146CFBBKP)? Also, what is the black coating on the blade made from? Why are the handle & pivot screws not black?

I love the Scabo... I carry it from time to time... but I am careful where I open it... it is a big, impressive knife that does not go unnoticed in an office setting...

now when the Zombie Apocalypse or some such happens... then I want a knife that says... 'I'm waiting' (molon labe)

When is it expected? Man is that a sweet looking blade. I love the scales. I sure hope Spyderco continues to use it on other knives as well.

I was about to start a similar thread. I really like the Szabo, although I have a hard time justifying purchases when the knife is based as a weapon. However the vibe Spyderco gives it is that Laci designed it with utility in mind as well. I like big folders.

I guess I'll have to wait on the black version with hopefully more information and availability.

For now, I got one of the Spyderco Szabo (C146CF) folders with satin blade and its own beautiful CF scales:

Stop posting pictures of it Ramzar. It is making my will to resist such a gorgeous piece dwindle. Late night shopping calls to me :D.

Sorry dude.

Had to get a knife on this so-called National Knife Day which I only learnt about yesterday!

No more baiting pictures... Today! :D

Two questions:

1. What is the purpose of the large semi-circular indentation on the top edge next to the spyderhole?
2. Is the top edge sharpened or just a swedge only?

Straight from Spyderco's description: "An unsharpened swedge on the back of the blade ensures an acute point and flows smoothly into a scalloped area on the spine that enhances the blade’s trapping potential when applied with reverse-grip skills."

What is really amazing about the knife to me is how much is hidden under the scales. Sure, it's a compression lock, but it is unlike any of the other compression locks out there as it has been deconstructed and reconstructed to work in the space provided. There are also hidden springs in those handles. The level of machining is what is really amazing to me. It is an inspirational piece of engineering that looks just like any other knife without all the hidden goodies.

I love the look of this second version! It's a little too specialized for me to carry around, but it's sure a looker!

I prefer the non coated.
