As I was going thru my quarterly „fix blade” phase, I was trying to decide the other day which one would suit me best for trekking / camping. Bear in mind, I’m no fan of batoning / chopping with my knife (got my Fiskars hatchet for that, thank you very much) so the blade was supposed to be used mostly for food preparation. At the same time, it was nice if it could double for self defense (sheepfold dogs can be really wild when the shepherd is not around) and also not to shy away from different chores one may encounter on the track.

I’ve narrowed my list down to 3: Al Mar SERE Operator, RAT RC-6 and Bark River Aurora, then decided to give Spyderco a(nother) go. So I’ve got the Temperance II.

Just got it and never had the chance to put it to hard use so far, but this was again love at first sight (as with the Military, T-Mag & Swick before). The knife has awesome balance and a certain heft that makes it quick & light in hand, like nothing I’ve experienced before. The double distal tapering looks so natural & logical, makes you think why it hasn’t been done before. The texture of the handle is just perfect (not too smooth, not too rough) and the neutral shade of brown makes sure NKPs won’t be gasping at the sight of it.

While a brown leather sheath would have been more appealing and a good complement in the looks department, the boltaron sheath provided is tough as nails and provides comfortable and stealth „small of back” carriage.

Can't wait to give this one a real world usage test - stay tuned :)

I plan on getting the T2 as soon as possible, it is the next Fixed blade on my wishlist, the only concern I have is the handle, I have big hands, but not like monster hands just L/XL is the glove size I wear.

hey Rick, I think you'll get along with the T2 just fine
it's very similar to the Millie handle (without the choil)

I hope to have one in the next few months, your Pics are great. I plan on making this my walk about knife, here is Texas we can carry it legal so I am looking forward to it.

Love the look of that blade

Can someone explain the distal taper?

Hi Knifenut,

A distal taper is when the blade gets thinner as you go from the spine or hilt to the edge or point. Most forged knives will have a distal taper going in both directions ("double distal").

We learned about this type of geometry from bladesmiths. (Forged knives are special and have many highly functional concepts).
