You may remember the "Passaround from Hell", that was the first temperenace fixed blade passaround, but I'm gonna give it a go again. This is still US addresses, sorry for those Canada folks.

The knife is a Temperance fixed blade with sheath.

This is twilight zoninsh. I was reading the Temperence passaround (from hell) thread just yesterday. I'm in the market for the serrated version and was reading any and all reviews I could dig up.

Anyhoo, I participated in the Lum Chinese passaround, so I'll pass on this one and give someone else a shot at it. :)

Harry, if you want on no problem.

Also I think when passarounds loose some of their shine it's harder to get people interested.

Dave, when it gets back and if there is no more interest I would like to be on the list for if/when it comese to Canada. :)

Johnclarke,

I'm not sure about the Canada thing, 4.s.ter looked into it for me and it equates to a big PIA, $$$ and 3 months extra time just crossing the border.

I'm thinking about it, but at the moment I don't have that kinda fight in me, sorry. :(

Here's the basic content of an email I sent to DaveH regarding the problems getting a passaround knife into (and out of) Canada. Bottom line, as Dave mentions, its a PIA and costs a fair amount also. This would likely be somewhat different (more difficult) if someone else received/imported a passaround knife because I live in a border city with a Canada Customs office in town. I think we were just lucky that the Spyderco Lum Chinese didn't get caught up in this process like the recent Impala passaround did.

I talked to Canada Customs and here is the story. For an importation of knives, on a non-business basis (i.e. individual to individual) Customs wants to make sure that they have "control" (read - they want to make sure I don't beat them out of some money). They're concerned that I may say that I'm going to return the knife back to the USA and then keep them and they won't get their taxes on the imported goods.

Therefore, if I import a passaround knife I have to make a temporary import declaration to Customs when I bring it (or receive it by mail or shipper) into Canada. I also have to pay the applicable taxes - 7% GST and 8% PST. The taxes are calculated on a fair market value. They will accept a value estimate if it seems reasonable. No duty is now paid due to NAFTA.

When I export the knives I have to go to customs and get an exportation form from them. I then apply TO OTTAWA (where Customs headquarters is located) for a refund of the taxes paid. I then wait 8 - 10 weeks for the refund (their estimate so it will likely be much longer). They would be able to refund the money locally but since it is a WEAPON involved it MUST be processed by their head office. The fact the WEAPONS are involved (I tried the "hand tool" argument but I might as well have been talking about an AK-47) gets them real excited.

So the situation is that if I import a knife and estimate its value at $100.00 US or approximately $160.00 CDN I will have to pay $24.00 in taxes, then wait for the pass-around to complete, plus 8 - 10 weeks more (at least) to get get the refund. When I add the cost of me shipping twice (to the second participant and then back to you Dave) it really is getting a bit expensive to proceed in this manner. Unfortunately, I think that the passarounds to Canada are really going to prove either costly or difficult.

Hope this explains the problems - sorry for the length of the post

I'd like to take part.

Dave, I really have to thank you for these passarounds. They give me oportunities I wouldn't have otherwise.

4 s ter, thanks for the reply, I would have had to go back through and find your email.

I received the temperence back today.

I want to thank everyone as it's been well taken care of and it arrived well and securely packaged.
