Spyderco Tenacious blade retention?

After giving much thought, I have decided to buy the Spyderco Tenacious instead of Kershaw skyline to use as my EDC.

But I saw nutnfancy's video and some posts here that complains about blade retention of spyderco tenacious. apparently they say it's horrible. I REALLY REALLY do not want my knife to open in my pocket.

I heard that newer models of tenacious have this issue fixed. is it true??

Thanks

I've had one for over 12 months, never had any issues. It takes a pretty firm thumb to open it, and the notoriously picky Australian Customs don't mind it, meaning it doesn't flick open easily. Of course that only applies to the black ones, the blue ones are controlled, and can't be imported.

Had mine in my pocket for work 5 days a week, sometimes 6 for going on 3 years now and never had it open in my pocket even once. Buy with confidence.

You could carry it tip down. Or tip up, with the blade at the back of your pocket so it can't open. But I get that not everyone wants to do that.

I have had more than one knife open in my pocket, and it isn't fun. The 5.11 Tac-Pro Lite pants I am wear now have a small hole in the pocket and pant leg from exactly that. So I try to carry tip down, or as noted above if it has to be tip up.

Wait who carries tip up with the blade faced front? That seems like a more awkward draw, and makes waves or zip-ties useless, you'd be better off tip down than tip up faced front IMO.

Also, to OP, I have never had an issue carrying my Tenacious.

My tenacious was my pocket carry for years, until I moved to SA where lock backs are banned by city ordinance (silly silly lawmakers), so now my EDC is a BK14.
Never had it open on me unexpectedly, never even seemed loose, and I've seen nutn's video about it. He was carrying it in a fanny pack, so who knows if he grabbed it while getting something else out and pulled it open *shrug* They are inexpensive, take an edge well and hold it, and they're great slicers. If we get pre-emption passed here in Texas, it'll go right back into my pocket.
Buy one with confidence, confidence that you'll love it, and that if you don't, you can easily resell it as there are plenty of us that still do love it.

The newer ones ARE better than the early ones, but I can still shake the blade out with medium effort.

if it's going in your pocket I don't see any problems with it opening

I've got a buddy who has EDC'd his Tenacious for years. Never had it open up on him. Like powernoodle suggested, if it really concerns you just clip the knife to your pocket and shuffle it all the way to the back of the seam. There's no way the blade can accidentally open like that.

EDIT: Don't put too much stock in what nutn has to say.

IIRC, Nutnfancy had one of the earlier models which I remember a few people and Nutn saying the retention was a little weak. I know I've watched one of his videos long after he poked himself with his Tenacious and he had said that a later model he had handled did not have the issues of the one that bit him.

With that said, I have an early model and I carried it for years every day with no issues. It's been a great knife to beat on. Buy it. And to parrot what others have said, keep the blade against a seam if you're concerned. Good to go.

I don't usually EDC mine, but I just checked and retention seems pretty good. I did some very scientific testing, shaking the knife, clipping it to my pocket and jumping around, etc.

Personally, I don't believe there is any difference between the blue ones and the black ones. All they do is change the colour of the dye they put in the G10. My guess would be that there was one Customs officer that was especially anal about knives, and tried extra hard to get a blue one to flip open. Or maybe there was a QC issue on one, but I'm tipping an extra anal Customs officer.

I have both knives. I love them both. The funny thing is, my skyline opened in my pocket and jabbed me but no issues with the tenacious. Now to be fair, I'm left handed and like an idiot I switched the skyline to tip up to see if I'd like it. In my left front pocket, tip up on the skyline will mean the blade opens out into your pocket. Needless to say I put it back to tip down. It's pretty embarrassing to ask the salesman at the music store for a bandaid because you just cut yourself on a rediculously sharp knife. They are both fantastic knive and as long as you don't do anything stupid, like I did, you won't have any problems
