Spyderco Tenacious - Thumb Hole Too Sharp!

Hey all,

Just got a new Tenacious, I'm sad to say this is the first knife I'd had in which the edges (non-cutting edges) are so factory precise they are sharp! I actually cut my finger quite bad just opening and closing the Tenacious using the thumb hole.

So the question is, what is the best way to soften those knife edges?

That happened to me with a Delica. I just took some fine grit sand paper and polished the edges of the hole. Cleans them up real nice

I used very fine. 2k I believe. Light passes, just enough to take the bite off the edges.

Very light passes and check often. If it gets too rounded, you’ll lose the traction. It’s meant to be sharp but shouldn’t cut skin, just enough to ‘bite’.

It takes very little burnishing of hard edges, usually, to make a big difference in how 'sharp' they feel on the fingertips in use. Try some high-grit SiC wet/dry sandpaper wrapped around a conically-shaped or rounded end of a dowel or whatever, to burnish the inside edges of the Spyder-hole. Something like ~1000-1200 grit is a good place to start; it could produce all the softening you need, without risking taking off too much.

I have had a few Spyderco Delica and Endura knives which were too sharp on the blade hole.
Would rather them be too sharp and then I can fine tune to my comfort rather than be excessively rounded.

I use DMT diamond hones which are tapered and commonly used for serrated edges. Then a piece of leather with diamond spray to polish.

If you have sharpmaker rod, just run the fine corner around the hole few times with the weight of the rod itself. I never do, prefer my skin rub to smooth it by use.

I just use my Spyderco rods when I encounter any piece of metal that is either too sharp or needs to become sharp.
