I have to ask..many times on this forum , when someone is looking for a inexpensive folder the Spyderco Tenacious is often praised..I was thinking about getting one, but what makes this knife such a good knife...the steel seems so-so,made in china..so what makes this knife worth it..?

Because no matter where it's made, and for its cheep price it still lives up the the Spyderco standards of being a high quality, efficient, ergonomic cutting tool. Thats why.,,,VWB.

By no means am i putting this knife down, I want a hard core review for this blade...seems its gets a lot of praise...

well it is a low cost knife that is high in value
it has a FFG, G10 handle, and is inexpensive
like you said you can get better knives, i would rather get one of the new FFG delicas, but for some people they want a knife they can beat on and not really worry about.

If you want a hardcore review, spend the 30 and have at it. Obviously you have some interest in it, worst case scenario, wait, its 30 bucks, their isn't a worst case scenario!

I've had mine for a few weeks, and can't believe I waited so long to get it. Don't make that same mistake!

check out the review by blunttruth4u on youtube, pretty good hands on and it makes for a good chuckle. :P

I think you pretty much said it yourself:

"many times on this forum , when someone is looking for a inexpensive folder the Spyderco Tenacious is often praised"

That's about as good of a review as you could need, lots of folks like it. Then, like Jake said, it's 30 bucks. What could go wrong?

It has the fit & finish, features, solid lockup and smooth/fast action of knives costing 2-3X as much. Maybe even more. What's great about it is that it is so inexpensive that you can get it to see for yourself and it won't put you back much if you don't like it.

I love my Tenacious!

I think part of it's value is intangible. The whole is more then the sum of it's parts. More precisely more then the sum of it's cost. this is true of Other knives also but I need to get a beer so I will let others list them.

because its strong, ergonomic, and cuts like a razor. And it's worth double what you'll pay for it.

For a Chinese made product, Spyderco did a good job setting up proper quality control in the factory. Infact its just as good as you find in the US, if not better in a number of factories.

Now the steel of the blade is 8CR13MOV. Sure its not S30V, but to say it is so-so is a bit overkill. It is better than AUS 6 for instance, will keep it edge reasonably well and can be well sharpened. is comparable to many US brands stainless steel.

The handle is G10, it ergonomics are great, has smooth opening and a strong lock up and the quality for the value is great. Is it the best knife in the world, no. Is it excellent quality for those who don't want to or can't afford something better, it more than adequate for most people's needs.

so what makes this knife worth it..?

I might be the only one to say so, but in short, it isn't worth it at all.

I found that the steel was pretty shoddy and would tend to chip much more readily than other steels I've used. Using it as a work knife (at a warehouse), I found I had to sharpen it after every single shift. With a 13c26 blade, I found I could go a full work week without the same damage being done to the blade. My overall impression wasn't helped by the callouses and blisters I had formed from using it - it very literally rubbed me the wrong way . Plus, the G10 lost it's 'grippiness' after about a month, whereupon it was slick as snot (which, tbqh, I didn't mind one bit, but it may bother some people). Basically, I found the steel and the ergos to be really lacking.

To put this in perspective, I paid $50-55 (Canuckistani monies, with tax and shipping in) for my Tenacious. That's as much as I paid for my Leek, and more than I paid for my 2nd Cyclone, both of which (imho) have vastly superior materials and build quality. For what I paid for the Tenacious, I could have bought three Victorinox knives (and had some leftover), a Buck, or god knows how many Opinels. IMHO, for the money, there are much better knives available.

Just based on my experience, I'd say it's an over-hyped design. Your mileage may vary, of course.

The steel is nothing impressive, but the knife's design is fantastic. It's an amazing knife for $30. It's flat-ground, heavy-duty, has a great blade shape... I only wish they'd make it with a better steel.

Buy it. $37 shipped to your door maybe cheaper. Blade steel eh $30 lets not complain. almost a 4" cutting machine $30. you get a ton of edge and it is SHARP our of the box $30. Slicing is what it does. The ergos fit my hand perfect. It's beefy, im not scared to beat the hell out of it if I have too $30. Thumb ramp jimping is amazing/comfortable. Liner lock is thick. Spyder hole is huge for easy opening. Easily flickable or spydie dropped. Works with gloves. Although may needs a sharpening here and there it will slice, slice some more, and slice again $30.

$30 what do you have to lose?

Dorito Monk had a bad experience, but he also paid almost $20 more his...that makes a difference. Honestly don't think this knife is hyped. It's a $30 spyderco, think thats nuff said.

You really can't go wrong with this knife. It's a very solid, very ergonomic knife, with a great blade shape. The steel isn't "super" but it is very capable. You should've seen my buddy's eyes when I used it to cut down a thick sapling on his property.... I think I remember him saying something about "Like a laser beam". Then, I repeated the attempt after some hard use and it did just as well....

That said, I think the Centofante 3 or 4 by Spyderco are probably the best "My First Spydie" knife. You can find a Centofante 4 in the low $30 range in several places. In the days of every knife being thicker, clunkier, and uglier, the Cento keeps a thin blade that will slice like a razor. Super lightweight, and comfortable to wear anywhere, and the look doesn't frighten the sheeple. I wouldn't hesitate to put this knife through some very tough use, also.

i got my tenacious last year during my freshman year of college, i babied it like crazy because well it was a spyderco. but now i am just finding anything i can to cut with it. i absolutely love it. it holds an amazing edge for the steel it has. FFG definitely makes slicing easier. It disappears in my pocket in terms of me not knowing its there. Im starting to want to get maybe a few more one in the spyder edge and another combo as well as the baby brother the persistence cause it too looks amazing. All in all the tenacious is praised for a very good reason and you cant go wrong with something so great at such a very nice price. i got mine for around $35 and that to me was a great deal!

I've used this knife in the same role as Dorito Monk. Warehouse work since earlier in the fall this year. What he says is true, the steel is nothing to write home about, while it gets shaving sharp, it just doesn't hold that edge as long as some of the more pricey steels. That is where our similar experience ends.

This knife is still solid after months of continuous use, no play, great lockup, great pocket clip, handles like a dream with gloves on. Worth every bit of the $35 I paid for it. I really like how the cutting edge is so long. The sharpening notch is so annoying on many smaller blades.

This may be repetitive but here goes. One of the things I like most about the knife is the guilt factor. I tend to really have a hard time putting high end knives through really hard use. No problem with this one. At this price I am guilt free. Really hated liner locks until I used this knife. It slams open with that loud thwack (love that sound) and is perfectly tight.

There is a large cutting area on the knife and the fact that it's flat ground makes it a better slicer even though it has a thick blade. It's got a nice polished clip that can be moved 4 ways. You don't see that much in lower priced knives.

I am going to have to disagree with some on the steel. Sure it's not M4 but under regular use it holds an edge pretty damn good in my opinion. I have had the knife for over a year and have sharpened it once.

I am really not good at sharpening but had no problems bringing it back up to factory sharp. The knife has jimping to hold your thumb secure when you grip the knife. It has open frame construction which will allow you to keep the knife clean and free of dirt and lint.

You also have the benefit of an adjustable pivot if you need to disassemble or make an adjustment.

The only complaint I can think of about this knife is the G10 is not very grippy right out of the box.

For the price you just can't beat this knife.
