Spyderco Starmate plain edge – This is a first edition numbered (#525) Starmate in 440V steel. I had the knife modified by former BladeForums member, Drew Gleason. Drew’s changes looked like they came from the factory and made this just about the perfect EDC. The modifications include:

  • Cut-out of the liner lock and the G-10 scale to make a finger groove. This makes the handle much more comfortable than the factory straight-cut handle/liner lock.
  • Filework on the lock cut-out to allow better traction when unlocking the liner
  • Five additional traction grooves on the thumb ramp

This was my EDC for about a year and shows some scratches on the handle, clip, and blade. Looking under a loupe, it looks like I never sharpened it, but might have stropped it. My typical knife use is opening the mail and snack packages, shaving arm hair and slicing paper to test sharpness, and perhaps breaking down a cardboard box or two. The detent is strong and the blade is centered when closed. The liner lock is approx. 40% across the tang. There is a little up-and-down play when open, but no side-to-side play, and it passes the spine whack test. There is one handle screw missing on the clip side. It is one of three screws that attaches the handle to the backspacer (see pic.) Spyderco will probably send you a new screw or two if you ask them.

This is one of my all-time favorite designs and is a great knife for EDC. It’s thin but strong, and made that much better by the modifications.

$130 plus $7 for USPS Priority Mail shipping with insurance and delivery confirmation.

Thanks.
