Spyderco to the rescue!

I am posting this here as well as on the general forum. While I was standing on the platform waiting for the subway this morning, I noticed a group of high school kids gathered at the top of the escalator. There was obviously a problem. It looked like one of the girls had here shoelace caught. It turned out to be a cord in the cuff of her pants. Luckily it wasn't yet being pulled in but it was only a matter of time. I went over and asked if she wanted to cut it and she said yes. I already had my Delica out so in a matter of seconds it was open, snip, close, clip. The thing is, I am not allowed to bring a knife into my building. I keep the Delica in a clip on pouch on my belt with a Leatherman Wave and a Mini-mag light. I take it off and set it down with my keys and change before I go through the metal detector. I have had on seperate occassions, a zytel Dragonfly and a SAK classic confiscated for the day! A potential tradgedy prevented by a knife that I theoreticly should not be carrying! What can we do to bring back reason and sanity to our society, especially our schools? Three six your olds were suspended under a "zero tolerance weapons policy" because in a playground game they pointed their fingers at each other and said bang!

Hi, Phantom4. Sounds as if you were just in the (s)nick of time.

On another topic, Paracelsus and I are trying to put together a Knife Knuts lunch at Seibels in Burtonsville on 5/6/00 while Dave Virsky is in town. Care to join us? He is planning to check with the restaurant in the next day or so. Check in Community Center forum for updates and drop the word to anyone you can think of.

Good deal Phantom4...more stories like that NEED to be publicized..write to the local papers and tell them! Call the local TV and talk to them..
REALLY.put the ole anti-knife people against a rock and a VERY hard "sharp" place..LOL!
Thanks for helping another person out of a potentially dangerous situation with quick "cutting"!

Good one Ferret! Why didn't I think of that?
You also reminded me I better start saving my pennies, nickels and dimes for a Gunting. I just gots to have one!

This story reminded me of one I heard where a boy was on an escalator and somehow fell and his jacket got caught and his mother and some bystanders couldn't free him until a gentleman stepped foreard with a pocket knife and was able to cut him free. Just the same, I think the boy suffered arm injuries, but it could have been so much worse. If the PC patrol had had their way, that boy would have been maimed or killed.

Sadly, not all such stories have a happy ending.

A couple of years ago a young boy (I think he was about 7 years old) was killed when the doors of a London Underground train closed on the drawstring of his jacket(or perhaps part of the fabric of the jacket). Because the doors closed 'properly', the driver had no idea that the kid was trapped. I don't remember the details well, but I believe the kid was dragged along the platform and dashed against the wall as the train entered the tunnel as his mother's attempts to get the train to stop were in vain.

I remember thinking 'if only' at the time. But I live in a country, where any knife with a locking blade (even with a less than 3" blade) can be classed as an offensive weapon, where a customs officer told me serrated blades are illegal (bullsh*t, but I'd hate to think of all the housewives filling up our prisons) and where, last week, *three* separate people variously described my Navigator as 'dangerous' or 'scary-looking'.

Won't stop me carrying it though.
