I stopped by my local knife shop to see what was new and I spotted a little Spyderco I hadn't seen before. The "Toad". It's a small knife with a very small blade. I was interested until I turned it over and looked at the price. $104.00!!! Does anyone know what makes the price of the Toad so high? It had aluminum handles, but I don't see how that would make the price so high. Enlighten me.

$104.95 is "list" price, typically charged by "brick & mortar" stores that have the overhead that allows you to come in and handle the knives in person. Internet and mail order dealers typically charge less, of course, and there's the occasional "sale".

The price is up there with a fair number of "full-size" liner locks, because there are just as many manufacturing operations in making a precise little knife as there are in making a presices big knife. The C57 "Toad" is a precise little razor of a knife, with a very thin edge and a full-height hollow grind and very good fit and finish, that uses maybe $5(?) less in raw steel and aluminum than a 4" liner lock made the same way would.

Would a Dragonfly for half the price be a better buy? Maybe - these things are subjective. Ask a Chris Reeve customer if a dinky little Umfaan is worth $280 or more. This is why Spyderco offers a lot of models at various "levels" in the market, appealing to different tastes.

James Mattis,
When I look at it like that, it's easy to convince myself that I "need" the Toad.

Well...the "Toad" IS a well made, good looking, full-fledged Spyderco. I'll tell my wife that it is just the thing I need for airline travel.
SHHHhhhh....

I've got one for sale in the Kmife Exchange/" Tor Sale By Individual" for $60.
Can't beat the price, but I'm keeping the other two.
