I have seen a lot of threads bashing Spyderco, and their CS department here lately. I haven't read every post, or all the replies, and don't know what Spyderco had to say in every case. Nor have I sent a knife in to them recently, so I can't comment on their Service department as of late. Nor is this to refute any other posts or threads. But I can tell you exactly what happened in my case, over a decade ago.
I had just bought a Spyderco Military in ATS-34, and paid well over $100, and it was my first "high end" folder. I used it for a couple of days, amazed at the way the serrations tore through everything (it was my first serrated knife, as well). Then I got a little goofy. For some reason, I decided it was a good idea to cut up a soda can. Which the knife did just fine. But the coating got a little scraped up. Looking back, I believe the coating (whatever kind it was), wasn't actually scraped, there was just aluminum marking on the blade. But no matter, I was distraught, my brand new EXPENSIVE knife wasn't perfect anymore. So, I call Spyderco, and tell them exactly what happened. They say to send it in. Less than two weeks later, they send a brand new one out to me. I went on to use that knife hard, and still have it and put it into the rotation occasionally.
I went on to buy several more of their folders, and their multi-tool. I just recently purchased one of their folders from an authorized retailer earlier this year, couldn't be happier. I love their knives, and a large part of that was the initial impression left by their great Customer Service, despite the fact that, in my opinion, that did not warrant a new knife. Today, I wouldn't even worry about it, as all coatings wear, eventually. But they made a customer for life. And anytime my friends see me use a nice knife, and say, "You spent how much for that!?!?!?", I drag out this story, or one about Chris Reeve Knives, and tell them what you get for your money.
So, again, I can't provide any late breaking news about Spyderco or their CS, but I wanted to put this out there for everybody. Take from it what you will. I would still wager that there are many more success stories and satisfied customers, than disgruntled ones. Despite what you might hear on the Internets.
I don't have any pics of it brand new:
