Spyderco Took Care of Me

I have seen a lot of threads bashing Spyderco, and their CS department here lately. I haven't read every post, or all the replies, and don't know what Spyderco had to say in every case. Nor have I sent a knife in to them recently, so I can't comment on their Service department as of late. Nor is this to refute any other posts or threads. But I can tell you exactly what happened in my case, over a decade ago.

I had just bought a Spyderco Military in ATS-34, and paid well over $100, and it was my first "high end" folder. I used it for a couple of days, amazed at the way the serrations tore through everything (it was my first serrated knife, as well). Then I got a little goofy. For some reason, I decided it was a good idea to cut up a soda can. Which the knife did just fine. But the coating got a little scraped up. Looking back, I believe the coating (whatever kind it was), wasn't actually scraped, there was just aluminum marking on the blade. But no matter, I was distraught, my brand new EXPENSIVE knife wasn't perfect anymore. So, I call Spyderco, and tell them exactly what happened. They say to send it in. Less than two weeks later, they send a brand new one out to me. I went on to use that knife hard, and still have it and put it into the rotation occasionally.

I went on to buy several more of their folders, and their multi-tool. I just recently purchased one of their folders from an authorized retailer earlier this year, couldn't be happier. I love their knives, and a large part of that was the initial impression left by their great Customer Service, despite the fact that, in my opinion, that did not warrant a new knife. Today, I wouldn't even worry about it, as all coatings wear, eventually. But they made a customer for life. And anytime my friends see me use a nice knife, and say, "You spent how much for that!?!?!?", I drag out this story, or one about Chris Reeve Knives, and tell them what you get for your money.

So, again, I can't provide any late breaking news about Spyderco or their CS, but I wanted to put this out there for everybody. Take from it what you will. I would still wager that there are many more success stories and satisfied customers, than disgruntled ones. Despite what you might hear on the Internets.

I don't have any pics of it brand new:

Its a pity you didn't do a bit of research on that one before you used it. Looks to me to be a very early version of the Military and therefore potentially worth quite a bit as a collector's item, especially in mint condition. Of course, once its used its value decreases substantially.

It IS very early, I bought it in the late 90's and have been using it for over a decade. No pity there.

Oh hell, I get it now. Cool! I have one that isn't quite as old as yours but its got the chunky jimping. I love it, carry it all the time.

That might have happened way back then, but I doubt you would have the same story if you did that today. In fact I'm almost positive they wouldn't do anything if you told them it was because of something you did. But it wasn't a defect in materials or workmanship and they really shouldn't do anything.

No problem, it was a long post, easy to miss the details. It is a great knife. You get a lot of blade in a lightweight package. Throw a pic on here of yours, if you want. Thanks

I agree, that's basically exactly what I said. Their warranty shouldn't have to cover my stupidity, or anybody else's. I knew that when I chose to tell them how I stupidly thought cutting a can was a good idea, and was not expecting them to do anything about it. When they do anyway, hey, that's great. But I don't expect it. That was part of the point, that they went above and beyond what was necessary, and obviously it left a big impression with me.
