Hi there everybody,

I kind of stuck here with a task with my Sharpmaker from Spyderco.

I am very happy with the Sharpmaker and it amazes me how sharp you can get a knife with this tool. I got no problems when it comes to straight/plain edged blades.

I sharpen my Endura 4PE with no problem. Same goes with the Delica PE both have VG-10 steel...
With all my enthusiasm I bought the same knifes for EDC purposes also as combo edged versions.

Well here is the problem using the Delica Combo/Edge a lot... I got the feeling that the serrations were not that razor sharp anymore... No problem I thought and set up the Sharpmaker... watched the video with that part and did as far as I can tell the same thing Sal does in his description. (almost!)

Well the result is not what I expected...

Serrations got dull... and it took me a whole day and a lot of patience to get them back into shape (and a whole portion of luck I guess to hit the right spot/angle)... because of the short length of them on this knife I could not make the sharpening moves that precise and it was pain...
Also they did start to perform again after I stropped the serrations with a medium sort of microfiber cloth... and on my jeans and then again they became razor sharp!!!

So my question to you "fellow sharpeners" is this...

Is there a trick I could use to make this happen and to know and understand what I do.. cause I got a Pacific Salt SE and A Tasman Salt SE on the way and I am already frustrated about my abilities to sharpen serrated blades (or at least partially serrated ones for now!) and really want to use those blades.

I am sure that I can get the result with the larger serrations on the Endura combo/edge... but the new knifes I expect to arrive soon have in my understanding also the smaller serrations... but a longer surface to make the right moves I guess!

So if you can give me advice or refer me to some more information I would really thank you.

Have a good day

Michael

Well, there's always the sharpie trick.

I could never get my Delica very sharp on my Sharpmaker compared to my other Spydercos (all at 30 degrees) until I sharpened at 30 degrees for a while and then started over at 40, which is where I sharpen it now.

Are you pressing very hard? Serrations should need slow speed and light pressure.

I assume you understood from the video to sharpen 3-4 times on the beveled side, then one swipe on the other, but that's the only other thing I can think of that might be messing you up.

Just relax, watch the video again, and keep practicing. The sharpmaker is easy to use but it takes a bit of practice to get it perfect. It took me a hell of a lot longer to learn how to strop decently, and I still suck.

Good luck!

Hi chipped,

Now that you mention it I think I used a bit of pressure and was a bit to swift with my moves... maybe the right approach to this problem is the speed, pressure and of course technique as shown to keep the serrations sharp!

At least I see some light in the tunnel for my new knifes and I got a reason to think I will get it right.

Thanks for the quick reply it helped me to loose the frustration...

Have a good day

Michael
