I've seen a review on the Tuff

and was wondering is the action on all of them that super stiff?

If so why? I mean I honestly don't think that would make it tougher making the thing not so east to open or close?

It's extra stiff when new.

It gets easier to open one handed after breaking in.

I can spydie drop mine and open easily with one hand but it's never going to be as light to flick like a Para 2.

This is because the titanium lock bar is very strong and makes the blade detent nice and tight. This is actually a nice thing if you have ever been stabbed by your own Military while putting it in your pocket.

In the 4 Tuffs i have handled the Lock bar is just 2 stiff , it will never operate even close to a Chris Reeve.

When the blade is closed the tip is very close to the edge of the frame (military is much deeper) no room on the Tuff for any lack of detent.

I also feel the O.D of the washer is to small for this knife.

It will be difficult to open because it has more lock pressure than most blades. It is an attribute of having a folder this heavy and durable. The Lock bar is shorter and it has more tension on the lock than most framelocks. This knife was built to be harder, stronger, and more durable than regular knives. I'm afraid that you will have a harder time opening the knife at its best broke in state, that is the nature of this folder...Take care...Ed

I'm curious about this remark.
Would you care to elaborate?

The washer doesnt have much surface area for the size of the blade and the side load the lock puts on the blade (IMO).....when the pivot is backed off the slightest amount there is no forgiveness.

Are you thinking a larger washer would allow you to loosen the pivot a bit with no side to side play ?

Thats my line of thought.....I also think if the stop pin was threaded on both sides it would help.

I've got knife to operate much better than it came.

I also chamfered and polished the spyder hole and removed the sharp edge on the inner edge of the scale liner.

This knife also likes grease better than oil.

I got mine to ease up a LOT by taking it apart and slightly bending the lock bar back. It's not super stiff because the lock bar is bent over too far, it's still because the lock bar is so short and therefore much more rigid. However, that also means that bending the lock bar back the slightest bit will make a difference. Mine wasn't very far over to begin with, so I bent it back just a 1/16 of an inch at most, and now it's not nearly as stiff.

Bending it back will sacrifice soem of the lock-up strength though.
The callous on my thumb just had to grow a bit tougher...now it's just fine.:)

My pivot is actually nice and smooth, it's just the detent is very strong but I like it that way.

I have no problem opening it with one hand, but to make it easier I usually use my thumb and middle finger to pinch the blade at the fuller and break the detent open, then slide it open the rest of the way with my thumb. Works great.

A Para 2 or Military really flies open after you get the thumb work out on this baby for a while.
