Just got my Spyderco Schempp Tuff today. Boy is it tuff, it feels like a tank! The knife is unique, but the design and fit and finish are great! This knife is a great addition to my collection and makes me love Spyderco even more!

Just thought i would share that with y'all!

keep up the good work Spyderco!

I love the Tuff. killer knife. Mine was very stuff to open initially. now mine is flickable to open with some wrist movement, no blade play. yours should work its way in.

Hey, just wondering, are there any visible changes to the knife? I know there were a few cases of slipping locks, and Spyderco addressed it in the next run, just wondering what they did.

There hasn't been a "next run." In fact, Sal has posted that Spyderco has at least temporarily discontinued sales of the knife. :(

That's disappointing, hopefully it's only temporary. Did he give a reason?

I never heard of that.
If any slipped, my bet would be that people tweaked the lock-bar tension to make it less stiff, thus making the lock less secure than it was meant to be.
Mine is rock-solid. Seriously, I have no knife with a more secure lock-up...period.

"As far as the model goes. We shipped 1156 pieces before we stopped shipping so we could evaluate the 3 that claimed defeats. Certainly it's important for us to inspect the models and determine the problem so we can solve it. To date we have not received any Tuff's in customer service for any reason. We believe we have one that might be coming back. "Tis a puzzlement.

Oops. I was under the impression that a few had been sent back and Spyderco was making changes, but apparently that's not the case. I'm thinking of getting a Tuff, but the blade seems a little short for the intended uses.

I've found the blade to be quite long enough for all my needs.
Enough cutting edge, a generous choil, with enough overall blade length to keep food gunk out of the pivot when emergency food needs come up (like unexpected ice cream cake...it has happened twice now at work!).
It works good for wood too.

I say buy one.:)

Thanks for the info. It looks like Sal's last post, the one you pasted above, is from early November. Hopefully they get any potential issue sorted out, it sounded like there was some question as to whether there was an issue with the knives themselves or if a couple of owners screwed them up trying to modify them. I still have one on my wish list.

There should be some dealers who still have some stock. My vote, by the way, is that the issue was attributable to your second alternative. :(

I always wondered if any of these failures ever made their way back to Spyderco and if not did Spyderco resume shipment.

IIRC, according to the most recent post by Sal Glesser, none of the three had actually been returned.

That might tell you something, if it's still the case...

Hopefully that's the case and they'll start cranking them out again. Admittedly it's a bit of a niche-market product, but I'm kind of surprised that they only made a little over 1000 of them. It makes me wonder what the market is for other knives in this price range.

Sal Glesser said they'd shipped ~1150 when they halted shipments. The initial production run might have been as small as 1200, which I think is typical for a Taichung production run, or it might have been bigger.

As of yesterday, Ed said none had come back to Spyderco.

Not surprised, and I'm going to say this again, listen carefully...I think that you cannot help drawing some very strong conclusions from the fact that the, what, three?, people who very publicly announced that they'd had a lock-defeat on this knife have not returned the knives to Spyderco. That's all I'm going to write, read between the lines.
