Is the Spyderco Ultra Fine stone suitable for sharpening a straight razor? I remember hearing that it's rated at around 8000 grit.

I had a bit of a problem with my straight razor, so I sent it to a shop to have it fixed up. They told me that I shouldn't use the Ultra Fine, but that they didn't know the grits of their own stones.

Does anyone here use the UF stone to touch up their razors?

I've never used a spyderco stone, but as a reference point the grits I hone on are 4000 --> 8000 --> 12000 then hit cotton with chromium oxide, then my latigo leather strop... I've tried shaving off the 8000 and it's doable, but not very comfortable. Going up to the 12000 really makes a huge difference.

I don't know if you have a woodcraft in your area but that's where I got my 12k chinese waterstone after it was recommended on Badger and Blade; for the money it really works well.

I hone newly acquired razors (old stock) all the time using Spyderco stones. I use the Fine, then Ultra fine, then finish off with a Chinese 12k stone purchased from Woodcraft, and then finally strop on Latigo or Horse butt.

Its a pretty common combo if you aren't using a waterstone setup or Belgian blue, which I have as well. I like the spydie's because I don't worry about surface flatness. Works for me.
