Spyderco ultrafine 2x8 or 3x8 benchstone?

I really like mine in 2X8" . Its a good fit for me and handles most any knife I care to sharp on it . DM

it's worth it if you have large knives(with flat edges, no recurve) or a lot of sheepfoot knives. 3" wide is usefull when the knife has a lot of flat section, like the flat of a large chef's knife.

What, Spyderco's ceramic? I wouldn't recommend anyone get those. I had the set and 2 out of the 3 - all but the ultrafine - were not flat - and they are virtually impossible to flatten. I called Spyderco and they told me to return them, which I did. Then they just sent it back to me saying "they're within allowable specs". I posted photos showing how warped they were on one of these knife forums.

When is a completely flat surface necessary? At any time during the sharpening stroke, you're only hitting a certain spot at a given time. A fairly flat stone good enough for almost all the sharpening tasks I can think of. The 2 things I can think of are razor blades and trying to get a pretty edge on a Scandi grind knife.

Shemp, I'm not trying to argue your point, just wondering how serious the issue is. I have a set of Spyderco ceramic stones and I haven't noticed a problem when I use them for normal curved edge knives. I agree that they are not absolutely flat, my bushcraft knife came out sharp but rather ugly. The waterstones did a better job at giving it a good looking edge.

On my Spyderco ceramic, fine stone 2X8" came within .001" flat on both sides . One side I easily lapped to finer and flatter using a fine diamond stone . DM
