For those of you who own the Ultrafine rods, do you find them worth the money and effort to use? Do they make your blade significantly sharper? I'm thinking about purchasing a pair and I'd like to hear opinions.

imho definitly worth the money, much more so than the "diamond rods" which imho are overpriced and not realy necc unless your knife is really dull, and even then sandpaper on the std rods works as well imho.. i paid less than $20 for mine and i gen'lly leave them in the SM for touch ups and rarely use the std rods anymore myself. of course they are fine and not so good for initial sharpening/rebeveling or times when ya need to remove a lot of metal but for the final polished edge/touch ups they work great imho.

i also have a ultra fine spydie benchstone and used to use it all the time for final polishing, to get that really fine hair popping edge, never use it much anymore either since i got the UF rods, wish i woulda known about the UF rods when i got the UF stone, i would have passed on the stone, and they are not cheap, like $50 or so IIRC.

i like them myself.

They don't cost much, and they work very well. No reason not to have them IMO.

I got a pair of the UF rods after posing the same question here a while ago. Someone siad that I could get a hgiher level of sharpness with them. they were right. Used the same as the other rods, the UF rods can give a greater sharpness and a polished edge. After sharpening with them, you'll see and feel a difference in the edge. Plus, I leave mine in the Sharpmaker for 'hair poppin' touch ups. Definitely worth to have them.

Thanks for the responses. Sounds good to me. I think I'll go ahead and order a pair.

I think that I ordered my UF rods from New Graham Knives. I was surprised by how well they work. They hardly feel abrasive at all, but they truly make a difference--and they don't cost much.

New Graham is the best price I could find, too, about $8 a rod (before shipping). I can't think of any reason to order two, seems it'd be
pretty simple to switch the one from side to side...

I agree with the general assessment of the UF rods - no reason not to have them. I found that the flat are quite a bit finer than the F rods, while the corners are not much different.

An update:

I received these rods today and used them on two knives. The edges are significantly more polished compared to the fine rods alone and easily push-cut newspaper.

Very nice and I can definitely recommend these based on what I've seen so far.

Do you feel the Spyderco Sharpmaker system with the regular rods and an ultra fine, will give you about the same results as using a series of Arkansas stones, but easier to use?

Another question for users of the ultrafine rods. If I intend to strop with green compound after the fine rods, would I still need the ultra fine?
