Was looking through the spyderco catalogue today.
great range of products that gave me an idea of an urban survival pack from spyderco. I would put in it:

Spydersaw
Rescue or salt
tool harp
what else

Tell me if you think its a neat idea.
Apologies if you find my bright ideas annoying:foot:
cant resist:D

Manix
Spyderench
Spydersaw
Sharpmaker

Only thing missing is a bright flashlight!

Replace the Rescue with an Assist I (for the glassbreaker)

Need a pointy knife as well.
I like the idea of the Mannix better. I have a feeling it will break glass well enough and you don't have to carry an extra blade.

errr breaking car class is pretty hard. Some folks on other forums feel that an automatic glassbreaker is better because it can be pretty hard to swing hard enough with a glassbreaker to shatter the window.

Automatic like a Glock?:p

I think you are really splitting hairs. If I had to beat on it a few times extra with a manix I don't it would matter for the most part. I think a good brick or rock would work as well. But on the other hand, if you want to push a wheelbarrow around to have a specialized knife for every possible contingency, more power to you. I prefer to travel light.

As far as windows goes the thought is often being trapped in ones own car in which not to many rocks or bricks around.... or room to make really large full force swings. For that matter of the 100's of accidents I've responded to I don't recall to many rocks or bricks laying around there either.

I have smashed out an acountable number of car windows, you really have to put some force behind even a heavy bar or flathead axe at times. Or simply press a punch up to it. I would truley love to watch one use a closed folder to smash them out.

That is perfect

What would the torch be? We need a Spyderco/Surefire torch! :D

(sorry I am from the other side of the pond )

So I guess you are saying you will have you Spydie survival pack sitting next to you as you drive? Or will it be in your trunk? If you are worried about escaping from your car, then EDC the aforementioned Assist...or just mount the little German hammer or clone that is actually designed for this purpose on the console. This whole glass discussion is really a barely related tangent to the topic of this thread. Again if you want a dozen different knives in your Fantasy Spyderco only Urban Survival Pack that you carry right next to you at all times, more power to you :jerkit: . Cripes, I don't believe the title is Rescue People from a Car Urban Pack. The idea of survival and rescue are not necessarily congruent on all considerations. One point of divergence is weight. Rescue vehicles get the luxury of a large vehicle to carry their gear. Survival scenarios often end up with all the weight on Protangonist's shoulders. The problem really lies in that it is all scenarios. Any one desk monkey can come up with a scenario where item "X" does not work. A main function of a survival pack is to have just enough tools to cover as many possible scenarios as possible with the least amount of equipment.

I guess you just need to feel smart and talk about car glass. How about actually contributing to the discussion and offer an alternative pack list if you don't agree. I fully realize that cars have safety glass, and is more difficult to break than regular glass. I have the punch designed for that purpose in my own vehicle.

Not to knock anybody's choice of a knife, or to put down Spyderco (whose designs I'm finding more useful as time goes on), but I've also broken my share of car window glass. It would have to be a very desperate situation for me to swing any folding knife in my hand against sheet glass of any kind to try to break it. Auto glass is hard to break, as noted, you need to hit it in the right spot (corners), and you run the risk of cutting your hand on the carry through if the glass does break.
I tested the S&W First Response folder designed for seatbelts & window glass, it works reasonably well on both. The spring-loaded striker is a much safer way to break glass than by hammering on it with any folder that puts your hand that close to the glass.
I'll pass on a very simple tool idea for breaking car window glass- Get an old sparkplug, take a hammer to the white ceramic on it, break as big a chunk off it as you can, and stick that chunk of ceramic in your pocket. You now have a Glassbreaker that goes just about anywhere. :D
