Spyderco used knife value?

Hey all,
I have a growing interest in spyderco knives. Recently picked up a GB2, for what I thought was a good price. I am thinking of adding a para 2 as well. I see prices range from around $100 to over $300 and higher in some cases.

Clearly sprint runs and special steels go for more.

My question is if there is a resource where I can look up what the various configurations went for new? How is a guy supposed to get an idea of the value of a specific knife?

I'm happy to invest time here to learn, watch, observe... I have done that with other brands and feel like I have a good idea of price ranges. With spydies there seem to be many more variants. Sometimes I'm wondering if a knife posted for $175 is someone willing to take a loss on a $200 knife, or if they are trying to make a killing on a $130 knife...

Thanks in advance,
TRfromMT

Spyderco website has the MSRP for all knives they made. Subtract 40 percent and that was about its initial market value. It doesn't seem to have much correlation to current collector values.

Check eBay and the exchange.

GBs and PM2a normally for a hundered each.

Sprints go up.

eBay is a great source of current value if used properly. By "used properly" I mean that you must limit yourself to looking at completed auctions and BIN offerings where the item actually sold. Anyone can ask anything for anything, getting your asking price is another matter. You'll see plenty of auctions that end with no bids and BIN listings that end with no takers, simply because the sellers were asking twice or more what the item was worth.

I use BladeHQ and knifecenter websites to get market value, sometimes amazon as well. BladeHQ will show many as "out of stock" but if you go to the knife's page it should show what it sold for.

Often times, a simple search in google will turn up several online knife store's website for a given knife. The more common the knife the easier it is too find. Exclusives and sprint runs can be a considerably trickier to figure out the price of.

For a used PM2, expect something between $80 and $120 for a base model (standard g10 handle material and S30v steel). Add $10-15 for DLC coated blade and then of course there's variability for how used. You'll find many that are "carried but lightly used" as is the case for many EDC knives. They may get used a lot opening packages and such but they're not processing wood or animals with them on a regular basis.

Ultimately, market value is what someone is willing to buy one for. The rule of "a good deal" applies too, in that, no later than 2 weeks after you find a great deal on something, a nicer deal will come up afterwards. Motorcycles, cars, a house, knives... happens almost every time.

A nice pm2 in elmax popped up and I sent a pm to ask a question. In the next minute there were 2 other takers. Guess my instincts were right

I'll learn not to hesitate... :(
