Spyderco Valloton: Worth the money? Alternatives?

While waiting for my Deimos to arrive I am looking at the next folder on my list: the Valloton. Looking for anyone with personal experience with them. Also looking for alternatives in the same price range. Part of the attraction with the Valloton is the looks. I love the profile and the size. It would get some pocket time, but not any heavy use most likely. Any input is appreciated.

Ps- I did not post this in the Spyderco forum because I am looking for other alternatives as well and would like everyone's input, but if it needs to be moved- so be it.

I have the Deimos, and I have the Vallotton.......see the pattern!;)

I think that the Vallotton is as well put together as any of my custom folders, and my custom folders are excellent in their fit/finish, and their mechanics. It is a slim knife from top to bottom, but a great handful because it has good width. The blade is 4mm (.157") thick, and weight is 6.2 ounces. Both of these things let you know that there is a solid knife in your hand. Some folks are/were hesitant about the exposed liner, but I had no trouble at all. I did end up using my dremel to lower that area, and it has done fine.

That's good to hear. I'm actually between 2 Spydercos at the moment, the Valloton being one. I didn't mention the other because it's a completely different animal. It's the Perrin PPT. I like both but the Valloton is more the along the size I like, but that PPT is sure growing on me. Still looking for alternatives along the price and size of the Valloton as well.

Well I just got an email letting me know the Deimos I ordered is out of stock and my money has been refunded:grumpy:. so that moves this thread up the list of importance for me. Is there anything I should look at before I order a Valloton? Doesn't have to be Spyderco, just in the >$175 region. All suggestions appreciated.

I looked at them. I like the design but it didn't grab me like the Others. Always a possibility though.

I really like the Breeden Rescue except for the upper portion of the blade that's edged. If it wasn't for that, I'd love it.

Benchmade 710 perhaps?

It's very nice, but a little too plain for me. That's part of what drew me to the Valloton and Deimos.

I got the Valloton recently and really like it. Yes it's pricey compared to many knives but the looks, fit and finish are awesome. The grind towards the tip is very cool, haven't seen the equivalent anywhere Mine came dull but that's about the only bad thing I can say about the production, it feels great in the hand.

It is heavy, and while not very wide it's very thick (the handle as well as the blade) so it is too much for me to really EDC but your mileage may vary. Likewise the blade design is really not all that practical for general use but that's not what it's intended for. Really it's probably the knife in my collection most likely to make someone go "ooh, cool!", I know it's what I think whenever I play with it.

Hm, that one IS nice. But I don't think I like the blade profile. If you can't tell already I'm quite pickie.

not a fan of drop points?... if you like recurves such as the deimos maybe a zt 0200 or 0300? if you like modified sheepsfoot/leaf shaped blades maybe a boker anso 67 if you cant find anything else that spyderco offers

On a side note, I found a Valloton for roughly what I paid and was refunded for the Deimos, so I'll probably go ahead and order it. I am still looking to replace that Deimos though. Since the only people who have them in stock want $50 more than the 2 places I tried I will bide my time on that one. So I'm still looking for suggestions in the $150 range at the moment. Easier just to keep this one going than start a new thread.

I like drop points ok, but prefer tham in a larger blade, 4"+, if that makes any sense. While looking up the Anso I saw the Whale. Any input on that one?

I am also liking the Spyderco Perrin PPT. Anyone have input on that one?

One more that I like is the Spyderco Navaja. Love the blade, but the grip is terrible- to me. Alternatives to this one?

I appreciate all the suggestions guys, really helps me out. I am somewhat inexperienced with higher end folders and appreciate your knowlege.

the hogue ex-01 is also available in 4" in either drop point or tanto with aluminum or gmascus handles... i understand if its not your thing though

havnt owned a whale but i will note that bokers offerings have been hit or miss... mostly miss for myself

no hands on experience with the ppt or navaja. sorry, maybe others can chime in

another option is the combative edge m1 for recurves

Oh good lord, you might have hit the nail on the head with that M1... I'm drooling now. I just ordered the Valloton so I have to wait a week or so but that's the strongest contender so far, might even like it better than the Deimos. I love flippers...

I owned a Vallotton for about a year, and it is a great knife. The fit and finish is outstanding, and it's such a classy looking design. I hated to give it up, and if I didn't have to have the knife I traded it for, I would have kept the Vallotton for life. I'm looking to eventually pick up another one, when I have the cash available.
