Spyderco Vesuvius

I just got my Vesuvius a few days ago, and have carried it ever since. I thought it would just be a collectors piece, but I couldn't put it down. I was fixed on my BM 550, but have had a change of heart. The Vesuvius is a very convenient size. It also sits very flat in the pocket. The blade is made of ats-34, and is a tad bigger than 3". The handles are made of a fiberglass reinforced nylon (FRN) and have a fake blue shell inlay. Although fake, the inlays look nice, not cheap. The coolest part of the knife, is the new compression lock. As a lefty, I find this lock easy to disengage. The knife locks up very tight, with no play. The clip is set up for tip up, or down carry. I took the knife Mountain Biking with me yesterday, and used it for a bunch of little tasks. It is very handy, and has now become my daily companion. I am a bit upset Spyderco didn't use G-10 like the 2001 catalog suggested, but as that's O.K. It probably kept the price down , which is a good thing. I might just but another one to sit and look pretty. Take my advice, this is a great little knife. Go and get one.

Hi USAFSP. Thanx for the favorable comments. Appreciate. A lot of BM guys won't even consider looking at a Spyderco. We appreciate the open minds.

BTW, the shell is real shell, sliced very thin (.007) and layered to create the vivid color. Then we laminate it to .030 G10 for strength.

You are correct in the G10 being replaced by FRN. Mostly a cost issue. I guess if the design is popular enough, we can make variations.

There is a version coming out in the next couple of months that is all black, no shell inlay. Just a little silver bug inlayed at the butt.
