It's a beautiful knife, but it seems a little weighty. Does anyone have any experience with this blade. Also, having never used a knife with a ball bearing lock, can someone tell me how comfortable it is to close and how effective it is. I love liner locks, but I'm completely unfamiliar with this one.
Thanks.

It is, indeed, a beautiful knife, at least in my opinion. Some people here don't like the white Micarta handles. Eh, to each their own.

I had one in my hand yesterday for the first time at the Spyderco factory. Yes, it's a heavy knife. I don't know what the spec sheet says, but I'd guess about 6 ounces. Feels pretty good in your hands, though. The blade angles downward more than I would like. The ball lock takes about a minute of playing with it to get it down, but after that it's pretty simple to use.

I would very seriously consider buying one, but it's pretty seriously expensive for such a small knife.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the input. To release the blade for closing, is it that you pull back on each side of the ball bearing?

I just sold mine.

Not becauase it was too heavy.
I just kept finding things about it that I didn't like.

It is a very cool looking knife, and believe me, looks count in my book.

It was just too anoying in to many areas for me to want to carry it.

It's funny, I bought an Al Mar Mini SERE at the same time as I bought the Phoenix. The Mini SERE is now my favorte EDC. It looks pretty cool too. (I got the black blade version)

Right - put your thumb one one side and your index finger on the other and push the ball towards the pommel. Like I said, it's a little different, but you get the hang of it quickly enough. Heck, it took me more practice to get comfortable with a liner lock.

Ha one loved it and the other loved it, but sold it. I guess I'll have to think this one over :) .
Thanks.

Jill Jackson (a big Spyderco junkie around here) got one a couple weeks ago and posted a bunch of photos. You might want to dig around and see if you can find her thread. (She likes it too.)

I wanted to thank you Samael for your input. I decided to purchase a
Viele Phoenix today. Many others had wonderful comments about the
knife too.

Aw, shucks. Be sure to let me know what you think of it once it arrives. :)

The phoenix is definitely a very beatifully crafted knife but it's just not my cup of tea.I did find that with the ball lock on this knife had definitely no blade play at all.
