I just received a Spyderco Viele (C42S) from Discount Knives and the blade is marked AUS-8. The Spyderco website lists the blade steel as VG-10. Is this possibly an older model? Any assistance would be appreciated.

I picked up a Viele about 3 years ago and it was AUS-8. I think it's a great knife.

Hey hey! Everybody welcome newbie Randman on his first post. Can't say I have a spyderco, but I have several knives with aus-8. not too bad stuff... haven't had the pleasure of having to sharpen it yet though. Welcome aboard.

Welcome to the Forums!

You have the older version of the Viele. The newer ones use VG10 and have an adjustable pivot screw.

If it were me, and I wanted VG 10 as advertised in the description, I'd return it for an exchange. But I have and use the older model and find Spyderco's treatment of AUS 8 to be excellent. Still, I think it was wrong for Dis. Kn. to dump the older model.

I agree with Shivey. If they are showing that the knife is VG10, that is what they should have sent you. I have one of the VG10 and it is an excellent knife. I also have other knives in AUS8 and the 10 seems to hold an edge better.

Thanks all for the info. Was kinda thinking this must be an older model, bummer. Just so I don't misrepresent anything, the dealer I bought this from did not state the blade material on his website. I thought the blades were VG-10 on all of the C42's, I didn't know there were older models that had the AUS-8 blades. Does anyone know when the switch was made from AUS-8 to VG-10?

earlier this year they switched. I'd send it back. a quick reference for you to tell the difference (other than the steel type stamped) is that the aus 8 knife has the pivot pin and what i'm assuming to be the stop pin showing on the non clip side. the VG 10 knife only has the pivot pin visible. check your knife and the one on the website to note that difference

Hey Randman,
Welcome to BFC. I am not too far frrom you. I am in Springfield........anyway, I would send/take it back. The VG10 is much better and also there were some lock problems with some of the 8a models. Good luck.

Thanks to all for the help/welcomes, this is a great forum. In just a few weeks I have learned quite alot here. Contacted the dealer and he said I could return it, sounds like it won't be much of a problem. I will be posting in the future to ask what knives to add to my collection. Thanks again!:)
