Just some photos of a long-discontinued collaboration between Spyderco and Italy's Fox Cutlery -- steel frame-lock, olive wood inserts and N690CO steel from 2005.
I bought one new and actually liked the knife a lot. The olive wood onlays broke up the slick steel of the handle and provided additional purchase. the blade shape and grind made the knife an excellent cutter.
My only gripe with the knife was the stiffness of the steel lock bar which made it difficult for me to disengage.
I've had a bunch of knives with stainless frame locks that were not hard to disengage. I wonder if it's an Italian design thing. I just got a new LionSpy that has a Ti slab, but has a REALLY strong frame lock. It's a thumb killer.
I love the Volpe design though. Both the large and small ones are on my radar if I can ever find them at a reasonable price.
That Volpe steel framelock is a very stout little knife that cuts very well. It wasn't USA, or Japan, VG10, or S30V so at the time it sort of slipped under the radar. Looking at the knife though, it's a very nive cutting, slicing knife that sharpens easy, is in the Vg1o class, and will outlast most users.
It's like that sometimes. They are a good find nowadays and work as well as they ever have. BTW, doesn't Fox have a mini copy of that knife sold under their own brand?
